성탄절 전 4주간의 기간을 가리켜 대강절, 또는 대림절이라고 부릅니다, 대림절은 예수님의 임하심을 기다린다는 뜻이며, 대강절은 예수님의 강림, 즉 성육신 하여 이 땅에 오심을 기다린다는 뜻입니다. 둘 다 예수님의 오심을 기다리며 준비하는 절기라는 뜻으로 예수님이 오신 성탄절을 준비하는 기간임을 나타냅니다. 오늘부터 그 대강절이 시작됩니다.
대강절 기간 동안 매주 대강절 촛불을 하나씩 켜고 예배를 드리게 됩니다. 대강절 초는 “준비와 기다림”을 나타내는 보라색 초를 대개 사용합니다만, 때론 (사순절 색이 보라색이기에 차이를 두기 위해서) 희망을 나타내는 파란색 초를 쓰기도 합니다. 4개의 대강절 초 중에 하나는 핑크색 초를 쓰게 되는데 이는 성탄절의 기쁨을 나타내는 초로 대강절 세번째 주일에 켜게 됩니다. 대강절 초 가운데 있는 하얀색 초는 성탄절에 켜게 되는 그리스도의 초입니다. 대강절 초에는 여러가지 의미를 담기도 하는데 대개 희망, 사랑, 기쁨, 평화의 의미를 담아 대강절 주일을 지키기도 합니다.
대강절은 무엇보다도 희망의 절기입니다. 죄와 죽음이 가득했던 세상에 예수 그리스도께서 빛과 생명으로 오셔서 새로운 생명의 길을 열어 주셨음을 감사하며, 또한 새 희망을 바라보며 힘차게 나아갈 것을 다짐하는 절기입니다. 그렇기에 대강절은 성탄절을 기다리며 준비한다는 의미 외에 또한 다시 오실 예수님을 기다리며 우리의 마음과 믿음을 새롭게 하는 기간이기도 합니다.
이번 대강절부터 마태복음 설교 시리즈를 시작하려고 합니다. 2년전에는 누가복음으로 말씀을 전했었는데, 오는 새해에는 마태복음의 말씀을 나눠 보려고 준비하고 있습니다. 이렇게 2년마다 전반기에는 복음서를 하나씩 가지고 말씀을 전하려고 계획하고 있는데, 여러분의 기대와 기도를 부탁드립니다.
26년도 교회 달력이 곧 도착할 예정입니다. 교회 달력에 보시면 아시겠지만 26년도 교회 표어는 “젊음이 가득한 교회” 입니다. 우리 교회가 그렇다는 것이 아니라, 그랬으면 좋겠다는 희망과 그렇게 되어야 한다는 다짐을 담아서 표어를 정하게 되었습니다. 많은 교회가 당면하고 있는 “고령화”가 우리 교회에도 현저하게 나타나고 있는 가운데, 어른신들을 위한 창조적인 목회와 함께 젊은 세대를 위한 새로운 목회가 필요한 현실을 직시하면서 젊음의 열정과 꿈, 그리고 창조력과 활기참을 회복해서 새롭게 힘차게 나아가는 교회가 되었으면 하는 바램으로 “젊음이 가득한 교회”라는 표어를 생각하게 되었습니다. 그리고 그렇게 가득해진 젊음을 바탕으로 창립 45주년이 되는 2027년도에는 “부흥하는 교회” 라는 표어를 가지고 새로운 부흥의 때를 준비했으면 합니다.
요엘서 2:28에 보면 “너희 늙은이는 꿈을 꾸며 너희 젊은이는 이상을 볼 것이며” 라고 말씀합니다. 젊음이 가득하다는 것은 이렇게 새로운 꿈을 꾸는 것으로부터 시작하지 않을까 생각합니다. 26년도 주보 표지와 교인 주소록 표지 색을 젊음과 희망을 나타내는 파란색으로 준비하고 있습니다. 시편 110:3 에 보면 “새벽 이슬 같은 주의 청년들이 주께” 나온다고 했는데 진정 그렇게 푸른 젊음으로 가득차는 한미교회를 꿈꿔 보며 대강절을 맞이합니다.

The four weeks leading up to Christmas are known as Advent. The word Advent means “coming,” reminding us that we are a people who wait—waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus, who took on flesh and came to dwell among us. The Advent season emphasizes that this is a holy time when we prepare our hearts to receive Christ who comes to us. Today, we enter this blessed season together.
During Advent, we light one candle each Sunday. Traditionally, these candles are purple, symbolizing waiting and preparation. Some churches, wanting to distinguish Advent from Lent, choose to use blue candles to highlight hope. Among the four candles, one is pink, the candle of joy, which we light on the third Sunday. And in the center stands the white Christ Candle, lit on Christmas Day to celebrate the Light of the World. The four Advent candles often carry meaningful themes—hope, love, joy, and peace—which help guide us in our worship each week.
Advent is truly a season of hope. Into a world darkened by sin and death, Jesus came as light and life, opening for us the way of salvation. In this season, we remember with gratitude the hope He brought, and we renew our commitment to walk forward with that hope. Advent is not only about preparing for Christ’s birth; it is also a time of reawakening our hearts as we await His return.
This year, as we begin Advent, I will also begin a new sermon series on the Gospel of Matthew. Two years ago, we journeyed together through the Gospel of Luke, and in the coming year, I hope to unfold the message of Matthew’s Gospel with you. My plan is to preach from one of the four Gospels every two years during the first half of the year. I humbly ask for your prayers for this journey through God’s Word.
Our 2026 church calendar will arrive soon. As you will notice, our theme for the new year is: “A Youth-ful Church” This theme is not meant to describe where we already are, but rather to express our hope and our commitment to become such a church. Many congregations today face the reality of an aging membership, and we too see this clearly. With deep appreciation for our seniors and the creative ministries that serve them, we also recognize the need for fresh, Spirit-filled ministry for younger generations. Our prayer is that our church will recover the passion, dreams, creativity, and vitality of youth, so that we may move forward with renewed strength. And standing upon that renewed youthfulness, we hope that in 2027—our 45th anniversary—we may take up the theme “A Church in Revival” as we prepare for a new season of God’s renewing work.
The prophet Joel declares, “Your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions” (Joel 2:28). I believe that a church filled with youthfulness begins with people who dare to dream again. For this reason, next year’s bulletin cover and church directory will be prepared in blue, a color that symbolizes youth and hope. And as Psalm 110:3 says, “Your young people will come to you like the dew of the morning,” we dream of Hanmi Church filled with that fresh, morning-dew-like-youthfulness. As we enter this Advent season, may the Lord fill our hearts and our church with His hope, His peace, and His unfailing love. Amen!
