어느새 다음 주일이 추수감사주일입니다. 추수감사주일을 준비하면서 11월 한달 간 “감사 나누기” 캠페인을 갖고 있습니다. 추수감사절까지 20일간 매일 교인들의 감사 사연을 하나씩 나누고 있는데, 잊고 있었던 감사 내용뿐 아니라 생각지 못했던 감사 내용들을 전해 들으면서 제 자신의 감사가 더욱 풍성해지는 것을 경험하고 있습니다.

앰뷸런스를 타고 가면서도 기억해낸 감사, 가족들을 생각하며 드리는 감사, 지금까지 인도해 주신 삶의 여정과 새롭게 열어 주실 삶의 경험으로 인해 발견한 감사의 이야기들을 읽으면서 제 자신의 감사가 두배가 되는 은혜가 되고 있습니다. 특별히 중고등부를 생각하며 드린 학부모님들의 감사 사연은 2세 목회가 힘들다는 현실에 비추어 기쁨을 넘치게 하네요.

앞으로 계속해서 사연을 보내주신 분들의 감사가 기대가 됩니다. 마침 딱 한자리가 남았는데 혹시 감사 사연을 써 보내기가 힘든 분들 중 사연을 구두로 전해주시면 목회실에서 글로 정리해서 올리도록 하겠으니 연락 주시기 바랍니다.

저도 지난 일년을 돌아보니 참 감사한 일들이 많았습니다. 먼저 새해를 시작하며 첫번째 토요 새벽 기도회때 20여명의 중고등부, 어린이부 학생들이 참여해 부모님으로부터 축복 기도를 받은 기억이 떠오릅니다. 그리고 사순절 기간 동안 열심히 교인들과 1,251 시간의 기도를 적립한 일입니다. 앞으로 계속해서 이 기도의 응답들이 우리 교회와 교인들의 삶을 든든히 지켜 인도해 줄 거라 생각하니 이 또한 감사가 넘치네요. 부활주일때 세례와 견신례를 받은 8명의 학생들과 3명의 교우를 생각하면 지금도 눈가가 촉촉해지는 감사를 드리게 됩니다. 특별히 견신례 반 학생들을 위해서 기도해 주고 사랑을 나눠 주신 멘토 여러분을 기억하면서 마음이 따듯해지는 감사를 다시 한번 드리게 되네요.

또한 선교에 힘쓴 한 해가 되었음에 감사를 드립니다. 부흥회 강사로 오셨던 강영철 선교사님을 포함해 3분의 선교사님이 우리 교회를 방문해 주셨고, 페루비전트립을 통해서 선교에 대한 새로운 도전을 받게 된 한해가 되었습니다. 그 영향을 받아서인지 지난 회계연도의 선교헌금이 예산액의 200%인 84,158불로 집계되었습니다. 지출로 보면 선교비 지출이 전체 예산의 13%를 차지했으며, 교단에 낸 분담금까지 포함하면 전체 예산의 20%를 선교비로 보낸 풍성한 한해였습니다. 할렐루야!

이 외에도 참 많은 감사가 있는데, 이 모든 감사를 어떻게 담아낼 수 있을까 고민하다가 오는 감사 주일에 있는 성만찬을 푸짐하게 빵 18 덩이를 가지고 집례해 보자는 생각을 갖게 되었습니다. 지난 한해동안 한달도 빠짐없이 셋째 토요일이면 나갔던 Homeless 선교를 통해서 나눈 식사가 얼추 1800끼가 된다는 계산에서 빵 하나당 100끼식 쳐서 18 덩이의 빵을 가지고 하나님의 은혜를 기억하는 시간을 갖고자 합니다. 지난 부활절 때 1200시간의 기도를 기억케 했던 120개의 풍선과 함께 18개의 빵으로 푸짐할 이번 성만찬 테이블이 또한 잊혀지지 않을 풍성한 하나님 은혜의 상징이 되었으면 합니다. 그와 함께 보리떡 5개로 5천명을 먹이신 주님께서 18덩이의 빵을 통해 이루실 놀라운 일을 또한 기쁨으로 기대해 봅니다. 아멘!

Before we know it, Thanksgiving Sunday is upon us. As we prepare for Thanksgiving Sunday, our church has been holding a month-long “Sharing Gratitude” campaign throughout November. Each day for twenty days leading up to Thanksgiving Day, we are sharing one testimony of thanksgiving from our congregation. As I read through those stories, I find my own heart being richly filled with gratitude.

There are stories of giving thanks even while riding in an ambulance, stories of gratitude for family freshly remembered, and newly discovered thanksgiving in and through new experiences and the new stages of life that God has opened up. As I read these testimonies, I am experiencing my own gratitude doubling up! In particular, the testimonies shared by parents about our Youth Group have brought overflowing joy, especially in light of how challenging second-generation ministry is right now.

I look forward to the remaining stories that will be shared. By the way, we need one more story to be shared. So, if you have a story and writing it out is difficult, please feel free to call our office to tell us, and the pastoral office will gladly put it into a writing for you.

As I reflect on this past year, I too have much to be thankful for. First, I remember how we began the new year, with more than twenty youths and children coming to the first Saturday Daybreak Prayer Service to receive a blessing prayer from their parents. I am also thankful for the 1,251 hours of prayer our church diligently accumulated together during Lent. When I think about how God will continue to answer these prayers to protect and guide our church and the lives of our members, my heart overflows with gratitude. And when I think of the eight students and three members who received baptism and confirmation on Easter Sunday, my eyes still get wet with thankfulness. I also remain deeply grateful to the mentors who prayed for and lovingly supported our confirmation students. Remembering them fills my heart with warm gratitude once again.

And I am thankful that this year has been a year of strong commitment to missions. Three missionaries, including Rev. James Kang-McCann who came as our revival speaker, visited our church, and through the Peru Vision Trip, we received a fresh challenge and inspiration for missions. As a result, our missions giving for the past fiscal year reached $84,158, which is 200% of our original budget. In terms of expenses, missions spending accounted for 13% of our total budget this year, and including the apportionments given to our denomination, we gave 20% of our entire budget to missions. Hallelujah!

There are countless other things for which I am grateful. As I wondered how we might incorporate all of these thanksgivings into our Thanksgiving service, an idea came to me: to celebrate this coming Thanksgiving Sunday’s Holy Communion with an abundant table, with eighteen loaves of bread! Why 18 loaves? Through our Homeless Ministry, it is estimated that we have shared approximately 1,800 meals this past year. With one loaf of bread representing every hundred meals, eighteen loaves on the Communion table will help us remember God’s abundant grace. Just as the 120 balloons on Easter reminded us of our 1,200 hours of prayer, I pray that this communion table of eighteen loaves of bread will become another unforgettable symbol of God’s overflowing grace. I also hope that we can joyfully anticipate the amazing work that the Lord will accomplish through these eighteen loaves, just as He fed the five thousand with five barley loaves. Amen!
