지난 부활주일 예배는 너무나 감동적이었습니다. 비록 여러가지 부족한 면이 적지 않았지만 무엇보다도 11명이 세례를 받았다는 것이 너무나도 감격스러웠습니다.

11명의 세례/견신례를 집례하면서 이들이 그 자리에 서기까지 참 많은 이들의 기도와 사랑이 있었구나 하는 것을 다시 한번 생각해 보게 되었습니다. 이기화 성도님의 세례를 집례할 때, 그를 위해서 오랫동안 기도해 오신 성도님의 누님이 먼저 울음을 터뜨리시는 것을 보면서 ... 3년전 자신을 교회로 인도해 주신 권사님께서 주신 것이라며 세례공부반에 가지고 오신 한상욱 성도님의 성경책을 보면서 ... Thomas 형제의 간증 속에 담겨져 있는 축복속 여러분의 사랑의 손길을 생각 하면서 ... 우리 주변을 “구름 같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들”을 (히 12:1) 떠올리게 되었습니다. 그분들이 “오리를 가자 할 때 십 리를 동행해 준” (마 5:41) 그 사랑이 있었기에 우리 모두 오늘 이자리까지 오게 되었구나 하는 고백을 하게 됩니다.

이번에 또한 감사했던 것은 견신례와 세례를 받는 학생들을 위해서 함께 해 주셨던 멘토 여러분들의 섬김이었습니다. 각 학생들에게 기도해 주실 기도 멘토 한 분과, 그들과 신앙에 관한 대화를 나눠 주실 멘토를 각각 한 분씩 붙여 드렸는데, 그 멘토 여러분이 진정 성심 성의껏 학생들을 위해서 기도해 주시고, 만나 주시고, 사랑으로 감싸 주신 것을 학생들의 간증을 통해 알게 되었습니다. 맥도날드에서 만나 주시고, 카드를 보내 주시고, 선물도 챙겨 주시는 등 extra mile을 가 주신 사랑에 다시 한번 깊은 감사를 드립니다.

제가 처음 견신례에 대해서 알게 된 것은 중고등부 전도사로 섬길 때였습니다. 그 때 빌려 쓰던 미국인 교회 로비에 지난 30년간 그 교회를 거쳐간 견신례반 사진이 쭉 게시되어 있는 것을 보았는데 그렇게 꾸준히 다음 세대를 위해서 수고한 그 교회의 흔적을 보면서 무척이나 큰 감동을 받았던 기억이 있습니다. 그리고 나서 한번은 섬기던 중고등부 학생이 유대인 친구의 바르미츠바에 다녀오더니 너무 좋았다며 자신도 그런 축하를 받을 수 있는 유대인이었으면 좋겠다는 말을 하는 것을 듣게 되었는데, 그 때 우리 개신교의 견신례를 우리 자녀들이 기억할 만한 그런 축복의 잔치로 만들어야겠다는 생각을 품게 되었습니다. 그래서 그 때부터 조금은 유별나게 견신례와 세례식을 준비하게 되었는데 ... 이번에 여러분이 같은 마음으로 자녀들을 축복하고 축하해 주셔서 큰 기쁨의 잔치가 되었음에 감사를 드립니다.

지난 주일 성가대와 글로리 합창단의 찬양도 너무 감격스러웠습니다. 대원들께서 평일에도 나와 연습을 하는등 extra mile을 기쁨으로 따라와 주신 결과라고 생각합니다. 이 자리를 빌려 특별히 지휘자님과 두 분의 반주자님께도 심심한 감사를 드립니다.

이외에도 주일 새벽부터 나와 아침 준비를 맡아준 중고등부, 대학부, 청년부, 그리고 PTA 여러분, 그리고 전날부터 만찬 준비로 수고해 주신 여선교회, 새벽예배부터 안내를 맡아 주신 예배 위원들, 그리고 주일 오후 가장 늦게 교회문을 나서도록 수고해 주신 계수 위원 여러분까지 ... 모두 extra mile 가는 것을 불평 없이 감당해 주셨음에 우리 모두가 더 큰 부활절의 기쁨을 누리지 않았나 합니다. 그리고 이 모든 것이 하늘보좌를 버리고 멀고 먼 extra mile을 성큼 와 주신 예수님의 사랑과 은혜임을 생각할 때 ... 할렐루야! 감사에 감사를 드립니다! 그렇게 부활절을 보내고 나니, 십리가 아니라 ... 백리라도 갈 것 같네요. 아멘!

Last Sunday's Easter service was deeply moving. While there were certainly areas where we fell short, the most overwhelming joy came from the fact that 11 people received baptism—a truly unforgettable moment.

As I officiated the baptism and confirmation of these 11 individuals, I was reminded once again of the countless prayers and acts of love that brought each of them to that moment. Watching the sister of Brother Ki-Hwa Lee burst into tears as he was baptized, knowing she had been praying for him for so long ... Seeing Brother Han Sang-Wook bring to his baptism class a Bible that had been given to him three years ago by the Exhorter who first brought him to our church … Hearing Brother Thomas’s testimony, which reflected the loving care of his Blessing Small Group … All of these reminded me of “a great cloud of witnesses” surrounding us (Hebrews 12:1). It is because of the love of those who “went the extra mile” (Matthew 5:41), that we have all come this far.

I am also deeply grateful for the mentors who served the students receiving baptism and confirmation. Each student was paired with a prayer mentor and a faith mentor - someone to pray for them and someone to share conversations about faith. Through the students’ testimonies, we know how these mentors went an extra mile … whether it was meeting them at McDonald’s, sending cards, or even preparing gifts … it was their extra mile that helped our students to finish their confirmation journey.

I first learned about confirmation when I served as a youth pastor. At the church we were renting at the time, I saw in the lobby a long line of photos documenting every confirmation class from the past 30 years. I was deeply touched by that visible legacy of a church faithfully nurturing the next generation. Later, I remember a youth in our ministry attending a Jewish friend’s Bar Mitzvah and coming back saying how wonderful it was - and how he wished he were Jewish so he could be celebrated in that way. That moment stirred my heart with a desire to make Protestant confirmation a truly memorable celebration for our children. Since then, I have tried to prepare our baptism and confirmation services with special care. And this year, because so many of you shared that same heart - blessing and celebrating our children - it truly became a joyous feast. Thank you.

The Hanmi Choir and Glory Choir’s anthem last Sunday also moved many to tears. I believe it was the result of their willingness to go the extra mile - coming out for weekday rehearsals with joy. I want to take this moment to express special gratitude to our conductor and two accompanists as well. From the youth, college, and young adult ministries, along with PTA, who came early in the morning to prepare breakfast … to the Women’s Mission who worked hard preparing the Easter luncheon from days before … to the Worship Committee members who ushered starting at sunrise … to the Finance Committee who were the last to leave the church on Sunday afternoon … each of you went the extra mile without a single complaint. And because of that, I believe we all experienced even greater Easter joy.

As I reflect on all of this, I realize: every bit of it is possible because Jesus first came a long, long extra mile - leaving His heavenly throne to come to us. His love and grace are the source of it all. Hallelujah! I give thanks upon thanks!

Having spent Easter this way, I feel not just ready to go the extra 10 miles … but indeed a hundred miles if needed. Amen!
