목회실에서는 오는 사순절 기간동안 고등부 학생들을 위한 견신례 반을 운영하고 부활주일에 견신례를 행할 계획을 세웠습니다.

견신례(Confirmation)는 “믿음을 견고하게 하는 예식” 또는 “믿음을 확인 (confirm) 하는 예식” 이란 의미로, 유아세례를 받은 청소년이 부모의 믿음 가운데 받은 세례를 스스로의 믿음 가운데 본인 자신의 세례로 고백하고 인정하는 예식을 말합니다. 이를 위해서 유아세례를 받은 학생이 어느 정도 스스로 믿음에 관한 결정을 내릴 수 있는 나이가 되었을 때, 믿음의 기초를 가르치는 견신례반을 교회에서 제공함으로 스스로 믿음에 관한 결정을 내릴 수 있도록 돕게 됩니다. (견신례는 장로교의 입교, 또는 성공회나 가톨릭의 견진성사와 비슷한 것이라고 할 수 있겠습니다.)

예수님의 제자 만드는 것이 교회의 가장 기본적인 사명이라고 했을 때, 견신례는 교회가 감당해야 할 가장 기본적인 사역이라고 할 수 있겠습니다. 사실 자녀들이 태어났을 때 믿음 가운데 세례를 주고, 그들이 성장했을 때 견신례를 통해서 스스로의 믿음을 세울 수 있도록 돕는 것이 전통 교회에서는 일반적으로 있던 일이었는데, 세월이 흐르면서 그렇게 일반적이었던 것이 흔치 않은 일이 되어 버린 것이 또한 안타까운 교회 현실이기도 합니다.

그렇기에 오랜만에 갖게 되는 이번 견신례반은 그만큼 중요하다고 하겠습니다. 이번 견신례반은 이마이클 전도사님과 함께 John Shin 집사님, 그리고 제가 함께 교사로 참여하며, 그외 여러 권사님, 집사님들께서 멘토로 함께 해 주실 예정입니다. 3월 2일부터 7주간 진행될 견신례반을 위해 많은 관심과 기도를 부탁드립니다.

그러고보니 사순절이 얼마 남지 않았네요. 두주 반 후면 사순절이 시작되는 재의 수요일을 맞게 됩니다. 사순절은 원래 부활주일에 세례 받는 새교인들을 신앙안에 교육하는 기간으로 시작된 절기입니다. 그렇기에 이 기간 동안 우리 자신의 믿음을 새롭게 돌아보고 “견고”하게 하는 여러가지 노력을 하게 됩니다. 오는 사순절 기간동안 견신례반 뿐 아니라 성인들을 위한 여러 프로그램도 준비하고 있는데, 많은 참여를 통해서 한미교회 교인 모두가 믿음을 더욱 견고케 하는 은혜의 기간이 되기를 기도합니다.

중요한 것은 우리의 믿음이 예수님을 향하여 늘 성장해 가야 한다는 것입니다. 물도 한 곳에 오래 고여 있으면 썩어져 그 냄새로 세상을 오히려 어지럽게 하듯, 아무리 그 시작이 좋았던 믿음이라도 오랫동안 성장하지 않고 한 곳에 머무는 정체된 신앙이라면 하나님 나라에 오히려 걸림돌이 되는 것을 보게 됩니다.

오는 사순절 기간에는 한미교회의 모든 교우들이 견신례반 학생들과 함께 우리의 믿음을 새롭게, 그리고 견고케 하는 노력을 통해서, 더 큰 은혜의 자리로 나아가는 놀라운 역사가 있기를 기도합니다. 아멘!

The pastoral team has planned to hold a Confirmation Class for high school students during the upcoming Lenten season, culminating in a Confirmation Service on Easter Sunday.

Confirmation is a sacrament that "strengthens faith" or "confirms faith." It is a ceremony in which youth who were baptized as infants affirm and accept their baptism as their own, professing their faith personally. To facilitate this, the church provides a Confirmation Class that teaches the foundations of faith when these baptized children reach an age where they can make their own decisions about faith. (Confirmation in the Methodist church is similar to Profession of Faith in Presbyterian traditions or the Sacrament of Confirmation in Anglican and Catholic traditions.)

Since making disciples of Jesus is the church’s most fundamental mission, Confirmation is one of the most essential ministries the church must uphold. Traditionally, in many churches, it was common practice to baptize children into the faith at birth and later guide them through Confirmation to establish their personal faith. However, as time has passed, this once-common practice has become rare, which is an unfortunate reality for many churches today.

For this reason, this Confirmation Class, which is being held after a long time, is all the more significant. This class will be led by Pastor Michael Lee, Deacon John Shin, and myself, with several exhorters and deacons serving as mentors. The class will take place over seven weeks, starting on March 2. I ask for your prayers and support for this important journey.

Now that I think about it, Lent is just around the corner. In just over two weeks, we will observe Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. Historically, Lent was established as a period of faith formation for new believers preparing for baptism on Easter Sunday. Accordingly, this season calls us to reflect on our own faith and take steps to strengthen it. In addition to the Confirmation Class, we are also preparing various programs for adults during Lent. I pray that this will be a season of grace where all members of Hanmi Church can fortify their faith through active participation.

What truly matters is that our faith must always continue to grow toward Jesus. Just as stagnant water eventually becomes foul and pollutes its surroundings, faith that does not grow and remains stagnant—no matter how strong it was at the beginning—can ultimately become an obstacle to God’s kingdom.

During this Lenten season, I pray that all members of Hanmi Church, together with the Confirmation Class students, will strive to renew and strengthen our faith, experiencing the amazing grace that leads us into a deeper relationship with God. Amen!
