“사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없나니” (요 15:13)

메모리얼데이 주말입니다. 메모리얼데이는 남북전쟁시 목숨을 잃은 이들을 추모하기 위해서 1868년에 시작된 것이, 1971년 나라를 위해 목숨을 잃은 모든 이들을 추모하는 국경일로 새로 제정되면서 5월 마지막 월요일에 지켜지게 되었습니다.

우리는 우리의 삶이 얼마나 많은 이들의 피와 땀, 희생을 통해 주어진 선물인지를 잊고 살 때가 많습니다. 아파보니 그러한 사실이 더욱 현명하게 보이더군요. 24시간 교대로 환자를 돌보는 간호사를 포함한 병원의 많은 스태프들, 그리고 병원을 포함한 의료시설을 구축하기 위해서 수고했던 많은 이들이 있었을 것이고, 저를 치료하는데 쓰였던 많은 약품을 개발하기 위해서 또한 수많은 시간을 투자했던 연구팀들이 있었을 것을 생각하니 참 감사한 마음이 들었습니다.

그래서인지 이번 메모리얼데이는 조금 더 의미 있게 다가옵니다. 인간에게 가장 중요한 자신의 목숨을 바쳐 희생한 이들로 인해 우리가 지금 평안한 때를 누리며 살고 있다는 것을 생각하니 일년에 하루 가지고는 모자랄 것 같은 감사함이 밀려옵니다.

메모리얼데이를 5월에 정한 이유는 5월이 꽃이 만발한 때이기 때문이라고 합니다. 5월의 풍성한 꽃들로 먼저 간 이들의 묘를 아름답게 장식할 수 있다는 실용적인 이유로 그렇게 정했다고 합니다. 그런데 더불어, 그렇게 온 땅에 가득한 아름다운 꽃들이 피어날 수 있음은 그 뒤에는 우리가 잊어버리기 쉬운 많은 희생들이 있었다는 것을 또한 기억하라는 의미를 더해 보고 싶네요.

생각해 보면 우리의 삶 자체가 많은 이들의 사랑과 희생을 통해 주어진 선물인 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 이번에도 병문안 와 주시고, 음식도 챙겨 주시고, 문자로 연락을 주시고, 또 말없이 기도해 주신 많은 분의 사랑을 받으면서 하나님께서 허락해 주신 믿음과 사랑의 공동체가 얼마나 소중하고 힘이 되는지를 깨닫게 됩니다.

교회도 그렇습니다. 보이는 자리에서 수고하는 이들뿐 아니라, 아무도 알아주지 않는 자리에서 묵묵히 기도하고, 섬기고, 헌신하는 분들의 사랑 위에 오늘의 교회가 세워져 있다는 것을 기억하면서 감사를 드립니다. 누군가의 눈물의 기도가 있었기에 오늘 우리가 함께 예배드릴 수 있고, 다음 세대가 믿음 안에서 자라갈 수 있으며, 어려운 때에도 다시 일어설 힘을 얻게 되는 것이겠지요.

예수님께서는 세상에서 가장 큰 사랑은 자신의 목숨을 내어놓는 사랑이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 메모리얼데이를 맞아 우리 삶과 공동체 뒤에 있었던 크고 작은 희생들을 기억하며 감사할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그리고 우리 또한 누군가를 살리고 세워 주는 사랑의 사람들로 살아가기를 새롭게 다짐하는 은혜의 시간이 되기를 축원드립니다.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)

This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day began in 1868 as a time to honor those who lost their lives during the Civil War. Later, in 1971, it was officially established as a national holiday to remember all those who gave their lives in service to our country, and since then it has been observed on the last Monday of May.

We often forget that our lives are gifts built upon the sweat, sacrifice, and dedication of countless people. After becoming ill last week, that truth became much more vivid to me. As I reflected on the nurses who cared for patients around the clock, the many hospital staff members who serve tirelessly, the people who built the medical systems and facilities we depend on today, and the researchers who spent years developing the medications used in my treatment, my heart was filled with deep gratitude.

Perhaps because of that experience, this Memorial Day feels especially meaningful to me. When I think about how we are able to live in peace today because others were willing to sacrifice even their own lives, it feels as though one day a year is hardly enough to express our gratitude.

One of the reasons Memorial Day is observed in May is because it is the season when flowers are in full bloom. The beautiful flowers could be used to decorate the graves of those who had gone before us. But as I thought about that, it also reminded me that behind the beauty that fills the earth are countless sacrifices and acts of service that we too easily forget.

When we stop and think about it, our lives themselves are gifts made possible through the love and sacrifice of many people. During this past week, as so many of you visited me, brought food, sent messages, and prayed on my behalf, I was once again reminded how life-giving and empowering the community of faith God has given us truly is.

The church is no different. Today’s church stands not only because of those who serve in visible ways, but also because of those who quietly pray, serve, and sacrifice in unseen places without recognition. It is because of someone’s tearful prayers and faithful sacrifices that we are able to worship together today, that the next generation can grow in faith, and that we can find the strength to rise again even in difficult times.

Jesus said that the greatest love is to lay down one’s life for another. As we observe Memorial Day, may we remember with gratitude the many great and small sacrifices behind our lives and our community. And may this also become a time for us to renew our commitment to live as people of love who help bring life, strength, and hope to others.
