오늘은 어머니 주일입니다. 어머니 날은 Anna Jarvis란 분이 돌아가신 어머니의 추모 예배때 손님들에게 어머님이 제일 좋아하셨던 카네이션 꽃을 나눠주면서 시작되었다고 합니다.  그때가 1908년 5월 10일이었는데, 그 일이 전해진 후로 어머니를 기억하고 어머니의 사랑에 감사를 드리자는 운동이 일어나면서 먼저 몇몇 도시에서 어머니날이 제정되었고, 드디어 1914년 5월9일에 의회의 결정으로 Woodrow Wilson 대통령이 “모든 어머니에 대한 존경과 사랑을 공개적으로 표현하는 날”로 (as a day for "public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country) 어머니 날을 공포하기에 이르렀다고 합니다. 

조금만 생각해 보아도 어머니 역활처럼 중요하고 소중한 일은 없을 겁니다. Salary.com과 같은 기관에서 조사한 내용을 보면, 어머니가 집에서 하는 일들을 직업별 임금으로 계산할 경우 전업주부 어머니의 노동 가치는 연간 약 $160,000~$180,000 정도에 이른다고 합니다. 어떤 조사에서는 $184,820까지 계산되기도 했습니다. 그러니까 쉽게 말하면, 집에서 아이 돌보고, 밥하고, 청소하고, 운전기사 되고, 상담사 되고, 간호사 되고, 선생님 역할까지 하는 어머니들의 수고를 돈으로 계산하면 웬만한 고액 연봉 수준이라는 것이지요. 그러고 보니 어머니들이 얼마나 대단한 일을 하고 계신지 다시 한번 생각하게 됩니다.

시카고에 뇌성마비에 걸린 아들을 혼자 키우신 이영 권사님이란 분이 계십니다. 그 아들이 5살 때부터 자꾸만 꼬이는 다리는 펼 수 있게 하려고 대 수술을 3번을 했는데, 그 때마다 아파하고 힘들어 하는 아들을 바라보면서 “엄마의 소망”이라는 시를 쓰셨습니다.

내 남은 삶을 다 내어주어서 / 네가 낳을 수만 있다면 / 이 세상 그 무엇을 구걸해서라도

네가 걸을 수만 있다면 / 고통과 아픔을 내가 대신해서 / 네가 행복해질 수만 있다면

슬픔을 내 눈물로 씻어내어 / 너의 길이 환 해질 수만 있다면

어둠을 걷어내는 내 새벽기도가 / 네 삶을 지켜 줄 수만 있다면

엄마라는 이름으로 네 곁에 / 오래도록 남을 수만 있다면 …

이것이 어머니의 마음 아니겠습니까? 그리고 그 어머니의 사랑은 기적을 만들어 냅니다. (권사님의 아들은 온전히 걷게 되었고 대학까지 졸업했습니다!)  오늘 어머니 주일은 우리들의 삶 속에 그러한 사랑의 기적들이 있음을 기억하는 날이라는 생각을 해 봅니다.  아무리 세상이 힘들어도, 아무리 눈물이 마를 새가 업더라도, 우리 가운데 하나님의 사랑을 꼭 빼어 닮은 어머니의 사람이 있기에, 이 세상은 살만한 세상임을 기억하고 감사하는 하루가 되기를 바랍니다. “하나님을 어디에나 계시라고 할 수 없기에, 하나님은 어머니를 만드셨다” 라는 유대인의 격언처럼, 하나님의 사랑을 가장 쏙 빼 닮은 어머니의 사랑에 감사드립니다.

Today is Mother’s Day. The tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day began when a woman named Anna Jarvis handed out carnations—her mother’s favorite flower—to guests attending her mother’s memorial service, on May 10, 1908. As the news of her gesture spread, a movement began encouraging people to remember their mothers and express gratitude for a mother’s love. Soon, several cities began officially observing Mother’s Day, and eventually, on May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day as “a day for public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”

Even with just a little thought, it becomes clear that there are few roles as important as that of a mother. According to studies conducted by organizations such as Salary.com, if the work mothers do at home were calculated according to professional wages, the labor value of a stay-at-home mother would amount to approximately $180,000 per year. In simple terms, when you add together childcare, cooking, cleaning, driving, counseling, nursing, and teaching, the work mothers do would equal the salary of a highly paid professional. Thinking about this again reminds us just how extraordinary mothers truly are.

There is a woman in Chicago named Lee Young who raised her son with cerebral palsy on her own. Beginning when he was five years old, her son underwent three major surgeries in hopes that his legs, which continually twisted inward, could be straightened. As she watched her son endure such pain and suffering each time, she wrote a poem titled “A Mother’s Hope.”

If I could give the rest of my life / so that you might rise again,
If I could beg anything in this world / so that you might walk,
If I could bear your pain and suffering instead / so that you might become happy,
If I could wash away sorrow with my tears / so that your path might become bright,
If my dawn prayers that drive away the darkness / could protect your life,
If, with the name “Mother,” / I could remain by your side for a long, long time …

Is this not the heart of a mother? And a mother’s love creates miracles. (Her son eventually learned to walk fully and even graduated from college!) I believe Mother’s Day is a day for us to remember that such miracles of love truly exist in our midst. No matter how difficult the world may become, no matter how endless the tears may seem, because there is among us the love of mothers—a love that so closely resembles the love of God—this world remains a place worth living in. Like the Jewish proverb that says, “God could not be everywhere, so He made mothers,” today we give thanks for the love of mothers, the love that most beautifully reflects the love of God. Thank you!
