지난 주일 속대항 달란트 축제는 그야말로 감동 그 자체였습니다! 소문으로만 듣던 한미교회의 “끼”들이 찬란하게 빛나는 가운데 하나님께서도 분명 “보시기에 좋았다”라고 하셨을 것 같은 신나는 축제였습니다.
기발한 아이디어들과 휘황찬란한 의상과 소품들, 그리고 가슴 놀래게 하는 가무와 감히 근접할 수 없이 번뜩이던 승부욕(?!)은 우리만 보기에는 아까운 축제를 만들어냈습니다. 여러분 모두 정말로 수고 많으셨습니다! 그날 공동 우승한 감사속과 희락속뿐 아니라 모든 속에서 진정 열심히 준비해 주시고 열정적인 무대로 보여 주셔서 놀라운 축제가 되었음에 감사를 드립니다. 제가 특별히 감사한 것은 한 속도 빠지지 않고 다 참여해 주신 것입니다. 잘하건 못하건 한미 식구 모두가 함께 할 수 있었던 축제가 되어서 더없이 감사를 드립니다.
공동 일등을 한 희락속의 축하 잔치에 초대되어 갔더니 이번에 연습을 하면서 속원들이 많이 가까워지는 기회가 되었다고 말씀해 주더군요. 다 함께 교회의 잔치를 위해서 애쓰고, 박수 쳐 주고, “망가지기”를 서슴지 않는 모습을 보면서 한미교회의 저력이 깊숙이 느껴져서 참으로 감사했습니다. (이미 우리 교회는 젊음이 “가득한” 교회 같습니다!)
교회의 많은 것들을 중단했어야 했던 COVID로부터 벗어난 지 이제 5년정도 되 오면서 잃었던 것들을 하나 하나 되찾아 가고 있구나 하는 생각을 해 봅니다. 금년에 여름성경학교를 다시 열었고, 비전 트립도 다시 다녀오게 되었고, 이번에 속대항 축제도 열게 된 것을 보면서 교회가 새롭게 활력을 되찾고 있구나 하는 생각을 해 보게 되었습니다. (내년에는 만두 바자회를 꼭 하자는 속삭임을 여기 저기서 들으면서 더욱 그런 생각을 해 보게 됩니다.)
내년이면 교회가 44주년을 맞게 됩니다. 곧 이어 찾아올 45주년을 준비하면서 무척이나 바쁜 한 해가 되지 않을까 하는 기대를 해 봅니다. 45주년 기념사업회도 움직여야 하고, 그동안 미뤄왔던 신령직 위원회도 의논을 시작해야 하고, “젊음이 가득한” 교회라는 내년도 표어에 걸맞게 젊은 세대를 위한 사역도 넓혀야 하고, 연세가 깊어 가는 교우들을 위한 돌봄 사역도 더욱 창조적으로 마련해야 하고, 금년에 2배로 늘어난 선교 사역도 꾸준히 감당해야 하는 등 가슴 설레게 하는 많은 일들을 보게 됩니다.
교단적으로도 내년에는 총회가 있는 해입니다. 아프리카 대륙에서 처음으로 열리는 역사적 총회이며 2년전에 열렸던 감격적인 창립총회에 이어서 교단의 모습을 견고히 하는 많은 안건들을 처리해야 하는 중요한 총회이기도 합니다. 개인적으로 연회를 대표하는 총회 대의원이 되어서 또한 무거운 책임감을 느끼고 있습니다. 아울러 내년에는 순서대로 맡는 이 지역 교회 협의회 회장직을 또한 맡게 되어 “일복”이 터진 해구나 하는 생각을 하고 있습니다. 그런 가운데 보게 된 한미교회의 저력은 일복 터진 목사의 마음을 든든하게 하네요.
금년에 그동안 꼭 해 보고 싶었던 대학생들을 위한 Care Package를 만들어 보냈습니다. 제가 30대일 때 학원 목회를 하면서 시작했던 일인데, 우리 교회 대학생들에게 꼭 해 주고 싶었던 일이었습니다. 그 일을 해 치우고 나니, 다시 30대로 돌아간 기분이네요. 그러고 보니 정말로 한미교회는 “젊음이 가득한” 교회가 되어 가는 것 같습니다. 아멘!

Last Sunday’s Cell Group Talent Festival was truly moving in every sense of the word! Amid the dazzling display of the “talents” we had only heard about by word of mouth at Hanmi Church, it was a joyful celebration in which God Himself surely would have said, “It was very good.”
The creative ideas, the spectacular costumes and props, the heart-pounding songs and dances, and even the fiercely flashing competitive spirit (?!), all came together to create a festival far too wonderful to be enjoyed by us alone. Everyone worked so hard, and I am deeply grateful. I give thanks not only for the two co-champion groups, Gamsa and Huirak, but for every cell group that prepared so diligently and presented such passionate performances, making this an extraordinary celebration. What I am especially thankful for is that not a single group was missing—everyone participated. Whether polished or imperfect, it was a festival in which the entire Hanmi family could take part together, and for that I am truly grateful.
When I was invited to the celebratory gathering of the co-champion Huirak group, they shared that through practicing together, the members had grown much closer. Watching everyone pour their hearts into the church’s celebration, cheer for one another, and willingly “let go” and have fun, I felt the deep strength and vitality of our church. I was truly thankful. (It really seems that our church is already “full of youthfulness”!)
As we are passing about five years since the COVID period, during which so many church activities had to be put on hold, I am realizing that we are indeed reclaiming many that were lost. This year we reopened Vacation Bible School, resumed our Vision Trip, and now have held this Cell Group Festival. Seeing these things, I sense that our church is regaining fresh energy and vitality. (Hearing whispers here and there about definitely holding a mandu bazaar next year makes me feel this even more.)
Next year, our church will celebrate its 44th anniversary, and as we prepare for the upcoming 45th anniversary, I anticipate a very busy yet exciting year ahead. The 45th Anniversary Committee will need to get moving, long-postponed discussions of the lay ministry committee must begin, and in keeping with our theme, “Youth-ful Church,” we need to expand ministries for younger generations. At the same time, we must more creatively strengthen our care ministries for our senior members and continue to faithfully carry out our mission work, which has doubled this year. There are so many exciting and heart-stirring tasks before us.
Denominationally, next year is also the year of General Conference. It will be a historic conference—the first ever held on the African continent—and following the emotional and inspirational Inaugural General Conference two years ago, it will be an important gathering to address many agenda items that will further solidify our denomination. Personally, I feel a burden of responsibility as I will be serving as a General Conference delegate representing our Annual Conference. In addition, next year I will also take on the role of president of the Colorado Springs Churches’ Association, a position assigned in rotation. I find myself thinking that next year will truly be a year overflowing with responsibilities! Yet, in the midst of all this, witnessing the strength and vitality of Hanmi Church greatly encourages and steadies the heart of this pastor.
This year, I was finally able to do something I had long hoped to do—prepare and send Care Packages to our college students. This was something I began when I was in my 30s serving in campus ministry, and it was something I truly wanted to do for the college students of our church. After completing it, I felt as though I had returned to my 30s again. Come to think of it, we are indeed becoming a “Youth-ful” church, aren’t we?
