서머타임
다음 주일은 서머타임이 끝나는 날입니다. 공식 명칭은 “일광절약시간” (Daylight Savings Time)인데 저는 여태 제가 이민 왔던 70년대에 많이 쓰여 졌던 서머타임이라는 말을 쓰고 있네요.
서머타임이 끝난다는 것은 이제 여름은 완전히 지나갔다는 말이겠죠? 달력을 보니 2주후인 11월 7일은 입동입니다. 즉 겨울이 시작된다는 건데 ... 아직도 마음은 여름에 머물러 있는데 시간은 어느새 겨울의 문턱에 와 있네요.
연말은 여러가지 행사로 준비해야 할 일이 많습니다. 먼저 11월 마지막 주일에 있을 교인 총회를 위해서 여러 위원회가 바삐 모이고 있습니다. 2주전에 인선 위원회가 모여 내년도 각 위원회를 섬길 위원들과 임원회 임원들의 인선 작업을 마쳤고, 지난 주일에는 목회 위원회가 모였습니다. 목회 위원회는 여러가지 안건이 많아 이번 주일에 한 번 더 모이게 됩니다. 친교실 공사등 큰 일을 치르고 있는 재단 이사회는 이번 주일에 모이게 되고, 11월 첫째주일에 있을 재정위원회 모임을 위해서 재정 위원장님은 벌써부터 일주일에 2~3일씩 사무실에 나와 회의 자료를 준비하느라 수고하고 계십니다. 여러분들의 이런 많은 수고로 금년 교인 총회도 우리 가운데 역사하신 하나님의 놀라운 은혜를 함께 세어보며 감사하고, 또한 새롭게 바라보며 기뻐할 수 있는 은혜의 시간이 되기를 바랍니다.
우리 가운데 풍성한 은혜를 감사하기 위한 “속 대항 달란트 축제”가 추수감사주일 전 주일에 있게 됩니다. 여러 속에서 이미 오래전부터 준비해 주고 계신 것 같아서 감사하며 기대가 됩니다. 추수감사절에는 지난 한해 동안 우리 교회에 넘치게 부어 주신 하나님의 은혜를 다시금 세어보는 감격과 감사의 제단을 준비하고 있습니다.
두 달 남은 성탄절을 위해서는 성탄절 이브에 (24일) 성탄 찬양제를 준비하고 있습니다. 기획팀이 모여서 성가대, 글로리, 찬양팀, 중고등부, 어린이부등 각 부서에서 맡을 프로그램과 아울러 외부 음악가 섭외 또한 준비를 시작했습니다. 작년에 이어 아름답고 감동적인 찬양제를 – 금년에는 성탄절 이브에 – 올려 드릴 수 있기를 기대합니다. 성탄주일에는 4명의 유아세례가 있을 것 같아 벌써부터 기대가 되네요. 금년에는 부활절부터 세례식이 넘치는 한해가 되어 감사할 뿐입니다.
교인총회와 함께 남녀선교회도 총회를 준비하고 있는 줄 압니다. 작년 한해 활발한 활동을 보여주었던 PTA도 총회를 열고 한 해를 잘 마무리하고 내년을 준비할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 연말은 또한 속회를 재정비하는 기간이기도 합니다. 속장님들을 통해서 대충 의견을 들어보니 현재 속 구조를 계속하기를 원하는 분들이 많아서 큰 문제없이 내년도 속 배정을 마칠 수 있지 않을까 생각하고 있습니다만 ... (하나님만 아시겠죠?)
목회실에서는 추수감사주일 예배, 성탄주일 예배, 송구영신예배, 새해 첫 주일예배등 절기예배가 넘쳐나는 계절이라 잔뜩 긴장하게 됩니다. 거기에 새로 발간될 교인 핸드북/주소록등 일복이 터지는 절기인데 ... 그나마 서머타임으로 인해 다음 주일은 한시간 더 잘 수 있으니 ... 이 또한 감사한 일이네요!

Summer Time
Next Sunday marks the end of Summer Time. The official term is “Daylight Saving Time,” but I still find myself using the older term “Summer Time,” which was more common back in the 1970s when I first immigrated to the U.S.
The end of Summer Time means that summer is now truly behind us. Looking at the calendar, I see that November 7 — just two weeks away — is “Ipdong,” the first day of winter according to the lunar calendar. Although my mind still lingers in summer, time has already brought us to the threshold of winter.
As we approach the end of the year, there are many things to prepare for. Committees have been busy meeting in preparation for the annual Church Conference, scheduled for the last Sunday of November. Two weeks ago, the Nominations Committee met for its work of selecting committee members and officers who will serve next year. Last Sunday, the SPRC met, and because there were many items to discuss, they’ll be meeting again this Sunday. The Board of Trustees, which has been overseeing major projects like the renovation of the fellowship hall, will also meet this Sunday. Meanwhile, our Finance Chair has already been coming to the office two or three times a week to prepare materials for the Finance Committee meeting on the first Sunday of November. Through everyone’s dedicated efforts, I trust that this year’s Church Conference will once again be a time of thanksgiving and celebration as we look back on God’s amazing grace among us, and a time to look forward with joy and hope.
Our “Cell Group Talent Festival,” a friendly competition among small groups, will take place the Sunday before Thanksgiving, as a way to celebrate God’s abundant blessings. I’m deeply thankful and excited to see that many groups have already been preparing for quite some time. And for Thanksgiving Sunday, we are also preparing a service of gratitude, recalling the countless blessings God has poured upon our church throughout the past year.
Looking ahead to Christmas, we are preparing a Christmas Eve Praise Concert on December 24. The planning team has begun coordinating with the choir, Glory Ensemble, praise team, youth group, and children’s ministry, as well as inviting guest musicians from outside. Following last year’s beautiful and moving concert, we look forward to offering another inspiring one this year—this time on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Sunday, we are expecting to have four infant baptisms, which already fill my heart with joyful expectations. Indeed, this year has been overflowing with baptisms since Easter, for which we are deeply grateful.
Alongside the Church Conference, both the Men’s and Women’s Missionary Societies are preparing for their annual meetings. I also believe the PTA, which was so active and fruitful this past year, will hold its own meeting to wrap up the year and plan for the next. The end of the year is also a time to reorganize our small groups. From the conversations I’ve had with our group leaders, it seems that most members wish to keep the current structure, so we should be able to finalize next year’s group assignments smoothly.
In the pastoral office, this season is filled with busy work of preparing for many seasonal worship services — Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and the first Sunday of the new year. It’s indeed a busy time that keeps us on our toes. But thankfully, with the end of Summer Time next Sunday, we’ll get an extra hour of sleep! Hallelujah! That is, indeed, extra something to be grateful!
