오는 수요일부터 사순절이 시작됩니다. 사순절은 부활주일 전 40일간의 기간을 말합니다. 부활주일부터 거꾸로 40일을 계산할 때 주일은 세지 않기에 사순절의 시작은 수요일이 되는데, 이 수요일을 “재의 수요일”이라 부르며 회개의 표로 이마에 검은 재로 십자가를 그려 넣는 전통이 있습니다.
구약시대에는 회개할 때 재를 머리에 뿌리곤 했습니다. 그 전통에 따라 지난해 종려주일에 썼던 종려나무 가지를 태운 재로 이마에 십자가를 그려 회개의 상징으로 삼는 것이 재의 수요일 예배의 전통이 되었습니다. 우리 교회에서도 오는 수요일 저녁 7시에 “재의 수요일” 예배를 드리며 “재의 예식” 순서를 갖게 됩니다.
그렇게 회개로 시작하는 사순절은 마음과 행동을 조심하며 부활절을 준비하는 기간으로 삼게 됩니다. 초대교회에서는 사순절 기간을 부활절에 세례 받는 후보자들이 세례를 준비하는 기간으로 삼았습니다. 이번에 우리 교회에서는 사순절 기간동안 중고등부 학생들의 견신례반을 진행하게 됩니다. 이번에 9명의 학생들이 견신례반을 듣게 되는데 이 학생들과 이들을 지도할 Michael Lee 전도사님과 John Shin 집사님을 위해서 많은 기도를 부탁드립니다.
우리 교회에서는 이번 사순절 주제를 기도로 잡아 보았습니다. 여러 영성 훈련이 있지만 그중 가장 기본이 되는 것이 기도라 할 수 있겠습니다. 이번 사순절을 통해서 기도에 대해서 새롭게 배우며, 또한 우리의 기도가 더욱 깊어지는 은혜가 있기를 바랍니다. “기도하는 사순절”이 되기 위해서 아래 내용을 부탁드립니다.
1. 먼저 어떤 기도 제목들을 놓고 기도할 것인가 놓고 기도해 보시기 바랍니다. 그러는 가운데 하나님께서 주시는 기도 제목들을 “사순절 기도카드”에 적으셔서 사순절 기간동안 가지고 다니며 기도하시기 바랍니다. 그리고 그 카피를 헌금함에 넣으시거나 목회실에 전달해 주시면 그 기도가 응답되도록 사순절 기간동안 함께 기도해 드리겠습니다.
2. 사순절 기간동안 기도에 대한 6주 시리즈 말씀을 나누게 됩니다. 주일을 빠지지 마시고 기도에 대해 새롭게 묵상하는 기회가 되기를 바랍니다.
3. 사순절 새벽 기도회 시간에는 마크 배터슨 목사님의 “기도의 원 그리기”라는 책을 가지고 함께 기도에 대해서 배우고 실천해 가는 시간을 갖게 됩니다. “기도의 원 그리기” 책은 오늘 예배후 안내석에서 $15에 구입하실 수 있습니다.
4. 사순절 기간 동안 특별 새벽 기도회에 참석하실 수 있기를 바랍니다. 사순절 특새 기간동안 함께 읽어 나갈 말씀을 통해서 은혜를 받을 뿐 아니라 개인 기도 시간을 통해서 더욱 깊은 기도의 자리로 나아가는 성장의 기회가 되기를 바랍니다.
5. “기도통장 캠페인”에 함께 해 주길 바랍니다. 기도 통장은 은행에 돈을 적립하듯 우리의 기도를 하늘에 적립해 가는 캠페인입니다. 본당에서 드린 기도의 시간을 속별로 마련될 기도 통장에 기록해 주시면 되겠습니다. 바라기는 사순절 기간 동안 총 일천 시간의 기도를 드릴 수 있으면 좋겠습니다. 이를 위해 본당을 오후 5시까지 오픈해 놓겠습니다.
이외에도 여러분의 기도를 도울 작은 선물 이벤트들도 준비하고 있습니다. 이 모든 것을 통해 우리 모두 아름다운 기도자의 모습으로 성장해가는 사순절이 되기를 기도합니다! 아멘!

Lent is a 40-day period leading up to Easter Sunday. When counting backward from Easter, Sundays are not included, so Lent always begins on a Wednesday. This day is called Ash Wednesday, and there is a tradition of marking a cross on the forehead with ashes as a sign of repentance.
In the Old Testament, people would spread ashes oveer their heads as an act of repentance. Following this tradition, ashes, made from the palm branches used on last year's Palm Sunday, are used to draw a cross on the forehead during the Ash Wednesday service. Our church will hold an Ash Wednesday service at 7 PM this Wednesday, which will include the imposition of ashes ceremony.
Lent begins with repentance and serves as a time to prepare for Easter through careful reflection in both heart and action. In the early church, this period was also a time for baptism candidates to prepare for their baptism on Easter Sunday.
During this Lent, our church will hold a confirmation class for 9 youth group students. Please keep these students, as well as Pastor Michael Lee and Deacon John Shin, who will be leading them, in your prayers.
This year, our church has chosen prayer as the theme for Lent. While there are many spiritual disciplines, prayer is one of the most fundamental. We hope this season will be an opportunity to learn more about prayer and deepen our prayer life. To make this a "Lenten Season of Prayer," we encourage the following:
1. Lenten Prayer Cards – Begin by asking God what prayer topics you should focus on. Write them on a Lenten Prayer Card, carry it with you, and pray over it throughout Lent. If you submit a copy to the offering box or pastoral office, we will also pray for those requests together.
2. Sunday Sermon Series on Prayer – Over the six weeks of Lent, we will explore a sermon series on prayer. Please attend every Sunday to reflect on and grow in prayer.
3. Morning Prayer Study – During the early morning prayer meetings, we will study "Draw the Circle" by Mark Batterson. This book is available at the welcome desk for $10.
4. Special Early Morning Prayer Meetings – Join us for these special prayer meetings during Lent. Through Scripture readings and personal prayer time, we pray this will be an opportunity for deeper spiritual growth.
5. "Prayer Bank" Campaign – Just as we deposit money in a bank, we will symbolically "deposit" our prayers in heaven. Please record your prayer hours in the prayer log designated for each group. Our goal is to reach 1,000 hours of prayer during Lent. For this, the sanctuary will remain open until 5 PM daily.
Additionally, there will be some small events to support your prayer journey. We pray that through all these efforts, this Lent will be a season where we grow as faithful people of prayer. Amen!
