이번 겨울은 예년에 비해 많이 추운 것 같습니다. 눈도 작년에 비해 많이 왔고요. 콜로라도 스프링스는 눈이 아무리 많이 내려도 하루 내리고는 그 다음날은 반짝 뜨는 해로 다 녹곤 했는데 이번 겨울에는 여러 날 눈이 내리고 여러 날 쌓여 있는 것을 보게 됩니다. 지난 목요일도 눈이 1인치도 안 되게 조금 올 거라고 했는데 하루 종일 눈이 오더니 7~8 인치까지 쌓인 눈이 되었습니다.
이런 날씨에도 불구하고 지난 1월은 참 열심히 모인 한달이 되었습니다.
먼저 토요 특새로 열심히 모였습니다. 첫번째 토요일은 자녀들을 축복해 주는 시간으로 20여명의 어린이부, 중고등부 자녀들에게 십자가 목걸이를 걸어주며 함께 기도해 주는 귀한 시간을 가졌습니다. 작년 부활절 새벽 예배 때 중고등부 학생들이 아침을 준비하느라 새벽예배에 참석한 후 다시 한번 자녀들과 새벽 제단을 쌓을 수 있는 기회가 되어서 참 감사했습니다. 앞으로도 새벽 기도회라는 한국 교회의 좋은 유산을 자녀들과 계속해서 나눌 수 있는 기회가 자주 있기를 바래 봅니다.
두번째 토요일에는 10여몀의 EM 교우들의 손에 십자가가 새겨진 자갈 돌을 쥐어 드리며 우리 교회를 위한 믿음의 반석들이 되어 주길 축복하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 새벽 기도회는 주로 KM 만을 위한 예배였는데 이번 기회를 통해서 자녀들과 EM 교우들도 함께 하는 예배가 되어서 얼마나 감사한지 모르겠습니다. 마지막 토요일에는 많은 여선교회 회원들과 남선교회 회원이 참석해서 토요 특새의 아름다운 피날레가 되었습니다. 그날 나눠 드린 손십자가를 60개 가까이 준비했는데 다 나가고 몇 개 남지 않은 것을 보면서 기도의 능력을 경험하는 귀한 한 해를 기대하게 됩니다.
마지막 토요일은 Super Saturday라고 할 만큼 모임이 많았습니다. 마지막 특새와 함께 2025년도 첫번째 속장, 인도자 모임이 있었고, 또한 금년도 첫번째 홈리스 선교도 그 날 있었습니다. 홈리스 선교는 추운 날씨라 많이 나올까 살짝 걱정이 되기도 했는데 중고등부 학생 5명을 포함한 23명이 참석해서 성황(?!)을 이뤘습니다. 150여분의 샌드위치가 다 나가는 것을 보면서 춥고 눈이 오는 날은 더욱 도움의 손길이 필요하구나 하는 깨달음을 얻게 된 날이기도 합니다.
지난 주일에는 첫번째 연합 속회가 있었습니다. 많은 한미 식구들이 참여해서 김성태 목사님의 인도 아래 기쁨 가득한 모임을 갖게 되어 참 감사했습니다. 여러 속회가 1월에 이미 모임을 시작하신 것으로 알고 있습니다. 열심히 모이는 교회가 됨에 그저 감사할 뿐입니다.
내일 (3일)이 입춘이라고 하네요. 일기 예보를 보니 최고 63도까지 올라간다고 합니다. 물론 봄이 되려면 2월은 훌쩍 넘겨야 하겠지만, 봄을 넘어 여름까지 생각케 하는 날씨를 보면서 이제 추운 겨울을 뒤로 할 때가 얼마 남지 않았다는 생각이 드네요. 그런 가운데, 이미, 벌써부터 여름의 열기로 뜨겁게 모이는 한미교회의 모습을 보면서, 봄을 쫓아가는 교회가 아니라, 봄을 불러오는 교회구나 하는 생각에 마음 가득한 감사를 드리게 됩니다. 할렐루야!
This winter feels much colder than previous years. We’ve also had significantly more snowfall compared to last year. In Colorado Springs, it usually snows for one day, and it quickly melts away the next day under the bright sun. However, this winter, we’ve seen snow falling for days and remaining on the ground for extended periods. Just last Thursday, the forecast predicted less than an inch of snow, yet it snowed throughout the day, accumulating 7 to 8 inches.
Despite such weather, January was a busy month with many gatherings. First, we gathered fervently for the Saturday Early Morning Special Prayer Meetings. On the first Saturday, we held a time of blessing for our children. More than 20 students from the Seed and Imago Dei Ministry came and received cross necklaces as we prayed over them. I was especially grateful because this prayer gathering provided another opportunity for our students to experience the early morning prayer since last year’s Easter Sunrise service. I sincerely hope that we can continue to share this important legacy of early morning prayer, a cherished tradition of the Korean church, with our children.
On the second Saturday, we placed cross-engraved stones in the hands of about ten EM members, blessing them to become firm foundations of faith for our church. Until now, early morning prayer had been primarily a KM gathering, but this time, our children and EM members joined us in worship, for which I am deeply grateful. The final Saturday was beautifully concluded with the presence of many members from the Women’s and Men’s Mission Fellowships. We had prepared nearly 60 handheld crosses, and by the end, only a few remained - an encouraging sign of the power of prayer at work, filling us with anticipation for the year ahead.
Last Saturday was truly a Super Saturday, packed with many meetings. Alongside the final special early morning prayer, we held the first small group leaders’ meeting for 2025, and we also carried out our first homeless outreach of the year. Given the cold weather, I was slightly concerned how many will show up for the outreach, but we were blessed with 23 participants, including five youth students, making the event a great success! Seeing all 150 sandwiches being handed out made me realize once again that on a cold and snowy day, there is an even greater need for helping hands.
Last Sunday, we had our first joint small group meeting, with many members of our church gathered together. Under the leadership of Pastor Daniel Kim, it was a joyful and meaningful time, and I am grateful for everyone’s participation. I have heard that many small groups have already begun meeting in January, and I am simply thankful to be part of a church that is passionate about gathering in Christ.
Tomorrow, February 3rd, is marked as the First Day of Spring. According to the forecast, temperatures may rise to 63°F, which is quite warm. Of course, we still have to make it through February; however, seeing this glimpse of warmth, I can’t help but feel that winter is nearing its end. And as I reflect on this past January, I realize that we are not a church that chases after spring, but rather, a church that calls forth spring. Seeing how passionately we have gathered, even in the midst of winter, fills my heart with overwhelming gratitude … and hope. Hallelujah!
