웨인 권사님이 8월 말에 미조리주로 이사를 가신다고 합니다. 건강상의 문제로 친척들이 있는 곳으로 이사를 결정하셨다고 합니다. 웨인 권사님은 43년전 우리 교회가 시작했을 때부터 함께 해 오셨다고 들었습니다. 지난 주에 이사 가신다는 소식을 듣고는 6명의 목회자가 거쳐간 세월을 지켜온 삶의 흔적이 감사해서 작은 감사패를 하나 마련했습니다. 이사 가시는데 짐을 하나 더해 드리게 되어 죄송하지만 43년 귀한 여정의 흔적 하나쯤은 가지고 가셨으면 해서 부리나케 준비했습니다. 43년! 결코 짧지 않은 세월이네요.
이번에 선교 부흥회를 인도해 주시는 강영철 선교사님은 동두천에서 이중문화 가정 아이들을 가르치는 일을 32년동안 해 오고 계십니다. 이번에 우리 교회에 오셔서 선교사님께서 동두천에서 선교를 시작했을 때 군인인 남편 따라 한국에 나갔다가 선교사님 사역을 이렇게 저렇게 많이 도와주신 집사님을 25여년만에 재회하는 기쁨과, 선교사님의 사역 초기에 많은 도움을 주셨던 장로님의 따님과, 또한 밀워키에서 선교사님 어머님과 같은 교회를 다녔던 장로님 가정을 우리 교회에서 다시 만나는 기쁨이 있으셨는데 ... 생각해 보니 지울 수 없는 귀한 기억들이 모이고 모여 선교사님의 지난 32년 세월을 꽉 채웠구나 하는 생각을 해 보게 됩니다.
선교사님이 콜로라도 스프링스에 오셔서 첫 식사를 교인 몇 분과 하는 자리에서 교인들께 우리 교회를 다니신지 얼마되셨냐고 여쭈니 37년이 되신 분이 계셨습니다. 10년이면 강산도 변한다는 말이 있는데 강산이 네번째 바뀔 세월을 교회와 함께 해 오신 것입니다. 그 세월 속에 가득 채워져 있을 하나님의 은혜의 이야기들을 생각하니 결코 작지 않은 그 세월들의 무게 앞에 마음의 옷깃을 다시 한번 여며 보게 됩니다.
내후년이면 우리 교회가 45주년을 맞게 됩니다. 반세기를 코앞에 바라보면서 지나간 세월에 감사하며 앞으로 어떤 역사가 우리 가운데 쓰여야 할까 많은 생각을 하게 됩니다. 이번 선교 부흥회 주제가 “부르심” 이었는데 과연 하나님께서는 우리 한미교회로 하여금 앞으로 어떤 역사를 향해 나아가도록 부르고 계신지 ... 기도하며 고민해 봅니다.
시카고에서 18년 동안 이민교회 목회를 하면서 조금 나태해진 나의 모습에 은퇴하기 전에 뭔가 좀더 의미 있는 목회를 해 봐야 하지 않을까 하는 생각 가운데 있었는데, 이렇게 다문화 가정이 많은 이 곳 콜로라도에 오게 되었습니다. 그 부르심 앞에 하나님께서 이 예쁘고 특별한 한미교회를 통해서 이루고 싶어 하시는 일이 무엇일까? 이번 부흥회 기간 동안 많이 고민해 보게 되었습니다.
오는 목요일 아침에 비전트립팀이 페루를 향해 떠납니다. 이번 여행중 어린이들에게 줄 선물 200개를 잘 준비할 수 있도록 도와주신 여러분께 감사를 드립니다. 그리고 낯선 곳에서 찾을 수 있는 새로운 답이 있기에 이번 7박 8일의 여정을 통해서 우리 교회를 항한 하나님의 계획을 새롭게 엿볼 수 있기를 기대해 봅니다.

No Mistakes in God's Calling
Exhorter Wayne will be moving to Missouri at the end of August. Due to health concerns, he decided to relocate to where his relatives live. I was told that Exhorter Wayne has been with our church since its founding 43 years ago. When I heard last week that he was moving, I felt deeply grateful for the life he has shared with us, faithfully walking through the years under the ministry of six pastors. In that gratitude, I prepared a small plaque of appreciation. Though I feel reluctant to add one more item to his moving load, I, nevertheless, decided to do it, hoping he might carry with him a token of the deeply meaningful journey of 43 years. Forty-three years! Certainly not a short time.
Our guest speaker for this Mission Revival, Rev. James Kang-McCann, has spent the past 32 years teaching children from bicultural families in Dongducheon. While with us, he had the joy of reuniting with a deaconess who, 25 years ago, while accompanying her soldier husband to Korea, had been a great help to his early ministry. He also met again the daughter of an elder who had supported him in the earliest days of his work, as well as the family of the elder who once attended the same church in Milwaukee with his mother. These reunions reminded me how the unforgettable memories that accumulate over time have fully filled out the 32 years of his ministry.
During his first meal in Colorado Springs with a few of our members, I asked how long they had been attending our church. One member answered, “37 years!” There’s a saying that even a landscape changes in ten years, yet here was someone who has journeyed with our church through a span in which the landscape would have changed four times over. Thinking of all the stories of God’s grace that must have filled those years, I cannot help but bow with reverence before the weight of such time.
In two years, our church will celebrate its 45th anniversary. As we stand on the threshold of half a century, I reflect with gratitude on the years gone by and wonder what kind of history God desires to write among us in the years ahead. The theme of this Mission Revival was “The Calling.” I find myself asking: What history is God calling Korean American Methodist Church to step into next? This has been my prayerful reflection.
After serving 18 years in an immigrant church in Chicago, I felt myself becoming a little complacent, and I wondered whether I should seek a more meaningful ministry before retirement. That was when God called me here, to Colorado, where there are many multicultural families. Through this unique and beautiful church, what is it that God desires to accomplish? This question has weighed heavily on my heart throughout this revival.
This Thursday morning, our Vision Trip team will depart for Peru. Thank you all for helping us prepare 200 gift sets for the children there. Because new answers can often be found in unfamiliar places, I hope that through this 8-day journey I might be able to catch a fresh glimpse of God’s plans for our church.
There is a song that has been lingering in my heart that says, “there are no mistakes in God’s calling.” I have a feeling that I will be singing that song a lot … as my prayer.

No Mistakes in God's Calling
