날씨가 엄청 추워졌습니다. 지난 금요일까지만 해도 40도가 넘는 봄 날씨 같았는데, 금요일 저녁부터 눈이 내리고 온도가 급격히 내려가는 한파가 몰려왔습니다. 대한인 월요일이 제일 춥다고 하는데 체감온도가 섭씨로 영하 20도 (화씨 -6도)까지 내려간다고 하네요. 다행히 화요일부터는 다시 원만한 날씨로 돌아온다고 합니다.
추운 날씨로 인해서 1월 홈리스 선교와 세번째 토요 특별 새벽 기도회가 한주 연기되었습니다. 다음 토요일은 좋은 날씨가 예보되고 있는데 지난주에 나누지 못한 은혜를 배나 나눌 수 있기를 바랍니다.
추운 날씨 속에 이스라엘과 팔레스타인이 6주간의 휴전협정에 합의했다는 따듯한 소식도 들려왔습니다. 지난 23년 10월에 시작되어서 467일간 지속된 전쟁을 통하여 5만명에 달하는 사람들이 죽음을 당했다고 하는데, 지금이라도 그 마음 아픈 죽음의 행렬이 멈추게 되어 다행입니다. 반면 우크라이나와 러시아의 전쟁은 계속되고 있는 가운데 북한군인들이 그 전쟁에 투입되었다는 안타까운 소식도 들려옵니다.
하지만 추운 겨울이 있으면 따듯한 봄은 곧 오는 법, 하루 빨리 봄처럼 따듯한 평화의 날이 지구 구석마다 찾아오기를 기도합니다.
작년 주보를 모아 주신 5분에게 오늘 쌀 한 가마니(?!)를 선물로 드리기로 했습니다. 어찌 보면 아무것도 아닌 것 같지만 한주를 빼지 않고 주보를 모은다는 것은 결코 쉽지 않은 일입니다. 교회에서 주보는 그 역사의 증인이며, 증거입니다. 주보를 통해서 우리는 우리 가운데 역사 하신 은혜의 흔적을 발견하고, 되새기고, 증거할 수 있는 것입니다. 그 안에는 추위를 이겨낸 우리의 자랑스러운 흔적이 있고, 그 가운데 하나님께서 허락해 주신 은혜의 온기 역시 고스란히 담겨 있음을 보게 됩니다. 그런 흔적을 정성스레 모아 주신 여러분께 감사를 드립니다.
여러 번 광고했듯이 금년에는 함께 성경통독을 해 나가고 있습니다. 지난 주까지 창세기를 마치고 이번주부터는 출애굽기로 들어 갑니다. 성경은 죄로 인하여 춥고 어두워진 이 세상을 하나님께서 어떻게 밝혀 가셨는가를 담고 있는 책입니다. 그 이야기들을 다시 한번 읽어 가면서 새롭게 힘을 얻고, 새로운 지혜를 배우고, 새롭게 인생을 살아 갈 수 있기를 바랍니다. 깜박하고 아직 시작하지 못하신 분들도 늦지 않았습니다. 이번주에 출애굽기부터 시작하실 수 있기를 바랍니다. 매월 첫째주일에는 통독반을 통하여서 지난달 읽은 부분과 새롭게 읽어 나갈 부분들에 대한 설명을 간단하게 나눔으로 통독하시는 것에 도움을 드리려고 합니다. 일년간 통독을 마치시는 분들께는 역시 쌀 한 가마니(?!)를 드릴 계획입니다.
인생을 살아가면서 이번 주말에 닥친 추위와 같은 그런 (갑작스러운) 인생의 추위 또한 만만치 않음을 우리는 다 알고 있습니다. 하지만 그 추위보다 더 따듯한 하나님의 은혜 또한 만만치 않음을 아시죠? 매 주일 예배 드림과 매일 같이 말씀과 동행함이 우리에게 따듯한 은혜의 통로가 됨을 믿습니다. 아멘!
The weather has turned extremely cold. Until last Friday, it felt like spring with temperatures exceeding 40°F, but starting Friday evening, snow began to fall, and an intense cold wave brought temperatures plummeting. Monday, the day of "Daehan" (the last of Korea's 24 solar terms, Day of Great Cold), is expected to be the coldest, with wind chill dropping to -6°F. Fortunately, the weather forecast is predicted to return to a more moderate state starting Tuesday.
Due to the cold weather, the January homeless outreach and the third special Saturday dawn prayer meeting have been postponed by a week. Next Saturday is predicted to have favorable weather, and we hope to share double the blessings we missed last week.
Amid this chilly weather, there is warm news that Israel and Palestine have agreed to a six-week ceasefire. The war, which began in October 2023 and lasted for 467 days, claimed nearly 50,000 lives. It is a relief that the painful procession of death has now ceased. On the other hand, the war between Ukraine and Russia continues, and distressingly, reports indicate that North Korean soldiers have been deployed in the conflict.
However, just as a warm spring follows a cold winter, we pray that days of peace, as gentle as spring, will soon visit every corner of the earth.
Today, five individuals who collected last year’s church bulletins will each receive a sack of rice! It may seem insignificant, but consistently collecting bulletins each week without missing a single one is no small feat. Church bulletins are witnesses and records of our history. Through them, we discover, reflect on, and testify to the traces of God’s grace in our midst. Within those bulletins are proud marks of our endurance through the cold season, and they also preserve the warmth of grace God has allowed us to experience. Thank you to everyone who has carefully gathered these marks of our history and God’s grace!
As announced many times, this year we are reading through the Bible together. We finished Genesis last week and will begin Exodus this week. The Bible is a book that reveals how God brought light to a world darkened and chilled by sin. As we read these stories again, we may gain renewed strength, learn new wisdom, and live transformed lives. If you’ve forgotten to start, it’s not too late! You can begin with Exodus this week. On the first Sunday of each month, we plan to provide a brief explanation and reflection on the portions we’ve read and the sections to come, through the Bible reading group, to support your journey. Those who complete the year-long Bible reading will also receive a BIG sack of rice!
As we navigate life, we are well aware that “sudden” winters of life, like the cold snap we face this weekend, are no small challenge. Yet, we also know that God’s grace, warmer than any winter, is just as steadfast. I believe that weekly worship and daily walks with God’s Word will serve as conduits of His warm grace for us throughout the year. Amen!
