지난 한주간 한미연회의 특새를 통해 많은 은혜를 받았습니다. 매년 1월 둘째 주간에는 한미연회의 여러 목사님들이 준비하신 영상 설교를 들으며 특별 새벽기도회를 갖고 있는데, 저 개인적으로는 잘 알지 못했던 목사님들의 말씀을 들을 수 있는 기회가 되어 늘 기대가 되는 시간이기도 합니다.
이번에 말씀을 들으면서 갑자기 내가 이 자리에 오기까지 참 많은 교회 공동체의 사랑 속에 믿음 생활을 해 왔구나 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 어렸을 때 다녔던 교회, 그리고 신학생때부터 섬겼던 교회 이름들을 하나 하나 적어보니 15곳이나 되었습니다. 그 교회 이름을 적으면서 울컥하니 밀려오는 감사와 함께 새로운 다짐을 하게 됩니다. 특별히 맨 아래 적혀 있는 우리 한미감리교회 이름을 보면서 더욱 그러한 마음이 드네요.
지난 4일, 금년도 첫번째 특별 토요 새벽기도회를 인도하면서 참 감사했습니다. 강대상 앞을 넉넉히 채운 20여명의 자녀들을 보면서 참 간절하게 기도했던 것 같습니다. 잠시 눈을 들어 보니 한쪽에서 전도사님이 학생들을 향해 두 손을 번쩍 들고 기도하는 모습이 보였는데, 왠지 그 마음이 느껴지면서 저도 더욱 간절하게 기도하게 되었네요. 어제는 EM 회중을 위한 특별 기도회로 모였습니다. 새벽 제단에 익숙지 않을 터인데도 EM 교우들이 여러분 참석하여서 함께 기도했던 시간이 참 은혜로웠습니다. 참석한 EM 교우님들께 교회를 위한 믿음의 반석이 되어 주십사 십자가가 새겨진 조약돌을 하나씩 선물로 손에 쥐어 드리고 참석한 교우 모두가 손을 들어 기도하면서, 뭔가 우리 교회에 새로운 역사가 열리는 것 같은 마음이 들었던 것은 저만의 느낌은 아니었을 겁니다.
특새 시간을 통해서 기도하는 가운데 새로운 각오들이 생겨나면서, 몇 가지 새롭게 생각해 보는 것들이 있습니다. 먼저 금년에는 한달에 한번 마지막 주일에 합동 속회를 가지려고 합니다. 합동 속회는 주일 점심 친교후에 목회실 주관으로 함께 찬양하고 말씀을 나누고 또한 속회별로 기도 제목을 나누는 귀한 은혜의 시간이 될 것입니다. 한달에 한번 이렇게 교회에서 모임으로 주중에 모이는 속회에 나오기 힘들었던 분들도 함께 할 수 있는 은혜의 시간이 되리라 기대해 봅니다.
아울러 토요 새벽기도회를 강화하려고 합니다. 마지막 토요일은 전과 같이 속장, 인도자 여러분이 다 참석하여 기도하는 시간으로 지키며, 새롭게 매월 첫째 토요일은 임원들이 함께해 교회를 위해서 기도하는 시간으로 삼고자 합니다. 아울러 성경공부 시간을 새롭게 늘려 보려고 합니다. 작년에 시작한 세퍼드라이프 성경공부를 계속해 가면서 중간 중간에 룻기 성경공부와 같은 단기 성경반 또한 늘려가려고 합니다. 그리고 이미 광고가 나간 대로 금년에는 온교인이 함께 통독할 수 있는 한 해가 되기를 바래 봅니다.
작년도 주보 표지색이 따듯함을 나타내는 오렌지 색이었던 반면, 금년도 주보 표지색은 성장을 나타내는 초록색으로 택해 보았습니다. 함께 따듯한 마음들을 모아 서로 격려하며 믿음이 새롭게 성장하는 2025년이 되기를 간절히 기도드립니다. 아멘!
Pastoral Letter: "This Year’s Color Is Green!"
Over the past week, we held the Korean American Annual Conference sponsored special early morning prayer meetings, which happens during the second week of January every year. I always look forward to this, because it is a special opportunity to listen to various pastors’ messages, though via pre-prepared videos.
While listening to the sermons this year, I was suddenly reminded of how much I have lived my life of faith within the love of so many church communities. Reflecting on this, I wrote down the names of all the churches I have attended since childhood, including those I served as a seminary student, and the list came to a total of 15 churches! As I wrote down those names, a surge of gratitude overwhelmed me, accompanied by a renewed sense of commitment. Particularly, as I wrote the name of our Korean American Methodist Church at the bottom of the list, I felt these emotions even more deeply.
On the 4th of this month, as I led our first special Saturday early morning prayer meeting of the year, I felt deeply grateful. Seeing around 20 children filling the space in front of the pulpit, I found myself praying with great earnestness. At one point, I glanced up and saw our youth pastor raising both hands in prayer toward the students. Feeling the depth of that heart, I too prayed with even greater fervor. Yesterday, we gathered for a special prayer meeting for our EM congregation. Despite not being accustomed to early morning gatherings, many EM members attended and prayed together, making it a truly grace-filled time. We presented each attending EM member with a small stone engraved with a cross, asking them to be a firm foundation of faith for the church. As we all raised our hands in prayer, it felt as though something new was being opened in our church’s history—surely, it wasn’t just my feeling.
Through the special prayer meetings, as new resolutions formed in my heart, a few ideas emerged. First, this year, we plan to hold joint cell group meetings on the last Sunday of each month. After Sunday fellowship lunch, these meetings, led by the pastoral office, will include praise, shared messages, and prayers for each cell group’s specific needs. I hope this will be a precious time of grace for those who find it difficult to attend midweek cell meetings to join us monthly at church.
Additionally, we aim to strengthen our Saturday early morning prayer meetings. The last Saturday of each month will remain a time for all cell group leaders and facilitators to gather in prayer. Newly introduced, the first Saturday of each month will be a time for church leaders to come together to pray for the church. We also plan to expand Bible study sessions. Continuing with the Shepherd Life Bible study launched last year, we will add short-term Bible study programs, such as studying the Book of Ruth. As previously announced, we hope this year will be one where the entire congregation engages in Bible reading together.
While last year’s bulletin cover color was orange, symbolizing warmth, this year’s cover color is green, representing growth. I earnestly pray that 2025 will be a year of mutual encouragement and renewed faith, where we gather our warm hearts together and grow in faith. Amen!
