We have arrived at the Second Sunday of Lent. I had the opportunity to look over the cards submitted by those who participated in the “4,000 Lenten Offerings” campaign during the first four days of Lent. A total of 31 people participated during the first week, offering 353 “life offerings” to the Lord. As I reviewed them, I felt deeply grateful to see how each of them lifted up different parts of their lives to God in such diverse and sincere ways.
Among the offerings were commitments such as: reading Scripture for one hour daily, giving compliments, walking, hiking, refraining from profanity, cutting back on soda, fasting dinner, giving up ice cream, quitting coffee, media fasting, attending daily early morning prayer, not complaining, giving generous tips, reducing caffeine, not drinking green tea, not watching the news, giving extra tips, encouraging others, doing hand exercises for 10 minutes daily, fasting one meal, going to the gym, avoiding political news, reading The Pilgrim’s Progress daily, sending one or two encouraging texts each day, doing calisthenics, speaking kindly to my daughter, attending the Ash Wednesday service, praising for 10 minutes daily, choosing joy, writing Scripture for an hour daily, walking 10,000 steps, not watching YouTube, avoiding fried foods, not speaking about others, laughing more, and so on.
Once again, I thank each of you who are participating in this campaign. I cheer you on, praying that through this Lenten journey, your “spiritual muscles” will grow stronger and that your life will be blessed with deeper peace. This past week, I personally practiced refraining from Facebook. Instead, I used that time to read books I had long postponed, and it turned out to be a truly meaningful time. I also finally began doing the squats I had so often resolved to do—now reaching 70 per day (with a goal of 100 next week!). I am thankful and encouraged that this season of Lent has enabled me to put into practice small changes in life that I had only thought about until now.
I am also grateful that through reading The Pilgrim’s Progress each day, I am able to reflect on my own journey of faith. Last Friday, while reading the section about “the pains of childbirth,” I remembered the “great cloud of witnesses” who did not shrink back from such labor pains for the sake of my faith. As I wrote their names one by one in my “Lenten notebook,” there were moments when my heart was overwhelmed with indescribable gratitude. The demand for The Pilgrim’s Progress has exceeded expectations, and we have had to place a third additional order. Hallelujah! Even if you are unable to attend the early morning prayer service, I encourage you to read it reflectively at home, while drawing comparison to your life. I believe you will experience the shaping hand of the Holy Spirit renewing your life.
Beginning this week, our spring pastoral visitations will start. I plan to first visit families we were unable to visit last year. If you would like a pastoral visit, please contact the church office. Throughout the month of March, our Wednesday services will also be offered as dedication services by each mission group. We have invited “young” pastors from the Colorado Springs area to preach. I trust their message will bring refreshing grace to us.
Starting today, Sunday fellowship meals also resume. As you know, Sunday is considered a “little Easter,” and therefore even during Lent it is excluded from fasting. I pray that the return of our fellowship table will serve as joyful encouragement along the Lenten journey. I wholeheartedly cheer you on as we walk together on this gracious journey of Lenten season. Let’s keep it up!
