벌써 새해가 시작된 지 3주가 지났는데 아직 수표나 서류에 2025년이라고 적었다가 지우는 일을 반복하는 모습을 보게 됩니다. 시간의 흐름에 빨리 적응해 가는 것이 쉽지는 않은 것 같습니다.
설교할 때 테블릿을 쓰기 시작한지가 7년정도 된 것 같습니다. 처음에는 테블릿이 꺼지거나 파일이 뜨지 않는 경우가 생길까봐 종이로 된 원고를 함께 가지고 올라갔었는데, 이제는 테블릿을 아주 편하게 쓰고 있습니다. 그럼에도 책은 아직도 종이책을 벗어나지 못하고 있습니다. 어느때는 가방에 이런 저런 책을 가득 넣고 다니면서 이 무거운 책을 벗어나서 테블릿 책을 봐야겠다는 생각을 여러 번 하지만 그게 그렇게 잘 되지 않네요. 변화를 쫓아 간다는 것은 또한 많은 노력을 필요로 한다는 것을 새삼 깨닫게 됩니다.
새해입니다! 더구나 45주년을 바라보는 2026년! “젊음이 가득한 교회”라는 표어를 내 걸고 조금씩 새롭게 변하고 바뀌는 교회가 되어 보려고 합니다. 변화가 어려울 수 있지만 함께 나아가는 길이라 생각하고 마음과 힘을 모아 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
이번에 지난 3년동안 변화가 없었던 속을 조금 바꿔 보았습니다. 모든 속이 고루 고루 힘을 얻어 새롭게 나아갔으면 하는 바람으로 몇 가지 변화를 주게 되었습니다. 오래 함께 했던 속원과 헤어져야 하는 속은 많이 아쉬우시겠지만 새로운 속원들과 힘을 모아 새로운 은혜의 터를 다져가고 넓혀가는 한 해가 되기를 바랍니다.
선교지에도 변화가 있게 됩니다. 오랫동안 관계를 가져왔던 선교사님들과 이별하는 것이 쉽지는 않지만, 오랜 시간 “편해진” 관계 속에서 느슨해질 수 있는 선교의 열정을 새롭게 하기 위해서 새로운 선교지를 몇 군데 선택하게 되었습니다. 무엇보다도 선교사님들과의 소통을 통해서 우리의 기도와 선교비가 가장 절실하고 유효하게 쓰여질 수 있는 곳을 선택하게 되었습니다. 새로운 선교적 관계를 통해서 새로운 열정과 기도가 더욱 힘차게 타오르게 되기를 기도합니다.
매년 해 오던 일과 행사들에게도 변화가 조금씩 있겠습니다. 조금 더 젊은 세대를 생각하고 배려하는 고민이 더해지겠으며, 45주년 후에 교회가 나아갈 길을 향해 조금씩 방향을 조절해 가는 한 해가 되겠습니다. 예를 들어 한어권만을 위해서 가졌던 특새, 부흥회등이 영어권, 자녀 세대를 포함한 행사로 폭을 넓혀 가는 것, 연합 예배시 EM, 자녀 세대를 위해 영어 사용 비중을 높여가는 일, 성인위주로 진행되었던 선교/비전 트립을 자녀 세대를 위한 여행으로 초점을 옮겨 보는 것 등을 들 수 있겠습니다. 이 모든 변화를 새로운 부흥의 때를 기대하는 마음으로 기도해 주시고 후원해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
지난 연초에 한 해를 여는 특별 새벽 기도회를 자녀들을 위한 축복 기도회로 가졌습니다. 많은 자녀 세대가 새벽을 깨우며 나오는 것을 보면서 “젊음이 가득한” 새벽 제단을 또한 꿈꿔 보게 됩니다. 우리 교회에는 하나님께서 역사해 주신 지난 세월을 향한 큰 감사가 있습니다. 그렇기에 또한 새날을 향한 기대와 소망도 하나님께서 크게 주실 줄 믿습니다. 그런 다짐으로 2026년을 열어갑니다!

It has already been three weeks since the new year began, yet I still find myself writing “2025” on checks or documents. Adapting quickly to the passage of time does not seem to be easy.
It has been about seven years since I began using a tablet when I preach. At first, I would take a printed manuscript with me, worried that the tablet might shut off or that a file might not open. Now, however, I use the tablet very comfortably. Even so, when it comes to books, I still have not been able to move away from paper books. Many times, as I carry a bag filled with heavy books, I think to myself that I should finally let go of them and read on a tablet instead—but that change never comes easily. Once again, I am reminded that pursuing change requires real effort.
It is a new year—especially the year 2026, as we look ahead to our 45th anniversary! With the slogan “Youth-full Church” we are hoping to become a church that is gradually renewed and transformed. Change can be difficult, but if we would consider this a journey we take together and unite our hearts and strength together, it will bring a new period of revival.
This year, we have made some changes to our small groups, which have remained practically unchanged for the past three years. With the hope that every group might be strengthened and move forward with renewed energy, some changes were made. For those groups that must part from long-time members, the sense of loss may be great. Still, we pray that this year will be a time to join hands with new members, laying a fresh foundation of grace and expanding the place where God’s blessings dwell.
There will also be changes in our mission fields. Parting from missionaries with whom we have shared long relationships is not easy. Yet, we can become too comfortable in old relationships and can fall into the trap of just keeping the status quo. So, in order to rekindle missionary passion, we have chosen a few new mission fields. Through communicating with missionaries, we have sought to select places where our prayers and mission support will be most urgently needed and most effectively used. We pray that through these new missionary partnerships, renewed passion will rise among us.
Some changes will also come to the events we have carried out year after year. We will give greater thought and consideration to the younger generations, and this year will be one of gradually adjusting our direction toward the path our church will take after the 45th anniversary. For example, special early morning prayer services and revival meetings that were once held only for the Korean-speaking congregation will expand to include the English ministry and our children. In joint worship services, we will increase the use of English for the sake of EM and the younger generation. Mission and vision trips that were primarily adult-focused will be re-envisioned with a greater focus on trips for our youth. We ask for your prayers and support for all these changes.
At the beginning of this year, we held the first special early morning prayer service as a blessing prayer service for our children. As I watched many youths and children rise early to come and pray, I began to dream again of a “youth-full” early morning service. We have so many thanksgivings for the past years in which God has powerfully worked among us. And because of that past, we can also believe that God will grant us great hope and expectation for the days ahead. In that faith … we open the year 2026. Amen!
