선교부흥회가 이제 일주일 앞으로 다가왔습니다.
이번 부흥회의 강사이신 강영철 선교사님은 한국에서 한국인 어머니와 미국인 군인 아버지 사이에서 태어나, 가난과 편견 속에서 성장하셨습니다. 12살에 미국으로 이민한 후 위스콘신주 밀워키에서 학창시절을 보내고, 미국 3대 미술대학 중 하나인 시카고 아트 인스티튜트에서 공부하셨습니다.
그 과정에서, 자신처럼 “정체성” 문제로 힘들어하는 아이들에게 예수님을 전하고자 하는 마음을 품으셨고, 다시 한국 동두천으로 돌아가 “Amerasian Christian Academy (ACA)”를 설립하셨습니다. 이 사역은 시카고 지역을 비롯한 미국 여러 이중문화 가정의 후원으로 성장해, 현재는 14개국에서 온 학생들이 미국식 커리큘럼으로 영어 교육을 받는 이름 있는 대안학교로 자리 잡았습니다. 특히 한국 내 다문화 가정의 증가로 힌두·이슬람권 학생들이 입학하여, ACA는 새로운 선교와 전도의 황금어장으로 쓰임 받고 있습니다.
우리 교회는 이중문화 가정이 많은 만큼, 이번 선교사님의 말씀이 더욱 뜻깊을 것이라 생각됩니다. 특히 토요일 저녁 7시와 주일 아침 9시에 영어로 진행되는 EM 부흥회에 영어권 교우들의 많은 참여를 바랍니다.
우리 교회는 하나님께서 주신 특별한 선교의 은사를 가지고 있습니다. 매년 12곳의 선교지를 꾸준히 후원하고, 단기선교팀을 파송하며, 매월 지역 노숙자들을 성실히 섬기고 있습니다. 또한 매년 선교 바자회를 통해 필요한 곳에 귀하게 쓰임 받고 있는데, 작년에는 A국 탈북인 선교센터 ‘예제원’의 미니밴 구입을 위해 만 불을, 올해는 페루에서 20여 년간 사역하신 홍종애 선교사님의 교회 건립을 위해 만 불을 보내게 됩니다.
작년부터는 매년 열던 부흥회를 “선교부흥회”로 이름을 바꾸었습니다. 여러 목사님들의 말씀을 듣는 것도 귀하지만, 선교 현장에서 헌신하시는 선교사님의 간증 속에서 우리의 첫사랑을 회복하고, 교회의 본질적 사명을 새롭게 다지는 시간이 되길 원했기 때문입니다.
예전에는 콜로라도 스프링스에 예수전도단 선교전략센터가 있어 많은 선교사님들이 이곳을 거쳐 가셨다고 합니다. 지금도 우리가 후원하는 선교사님들 중 많은 분들이 그때 인연이 닿은 분들입니다. 이러한 만남을 통해 하나님 나라의 지경이 넓어지고, 하나님의 뜻을 더욱 깊이 알아가는 은혜가 있음을 믿습니다.
올해만 해도 네팔의 구복음 선교사님, 페루의 홍종애 선교사님을 새로 만나게 되었고, 튀르키예의 탁요셉 선교사님, 이번에 강영철 선교사님, 그리고 10월에 탈북인 선교사 이빌립 선교사님께서 우리 교회를 방문해 주십니다. 이 귀한 발걸음들이 우리 교회의 선교적 마음밭을 더욱 기름지고 풍성케 해 주며, 또한 우리에게 특별한 축복의 통로가 되어 주는 줄 믿습니다. 아~멘!

The Mission Revival is now just one week away.
Our guest speaker for this revival, Rev. James Kang-McCann, was born in Korea to a Korean mother and an American serviceman father and grew up in poverty and under prejudice. At the age of twelve, he immigrated to the United States, where he attended school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and later studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the top three art schools in the nation.
During that time, he developed a deep desire to share Jesus with children struggling with “identity” issues like his own. This led him to return to Dongducheon, Korea, where he founded the Amerasian Christian Academy (ACA). Supported by multicultural families in the U.S., particularly in the Chicago area, ACA has grown into a reputable alternative school where students from 14 different countries receive an American curriculum taught in English. With the rise of multicultural families in Korea, many Hindu and Muslim students have enrolled, making ACA a new and fruitful field for mission and evangelism.
Because our church also has many multicultural families, I believe the message of this missionary will be especially meaningful. I particularly encourage our English-speaking members to join the EM revival services on Saturday at 7:00 PM and Sunday at 9:00 AM, which will be conducted in English.
Our church has been blessed with a unique gift for missions. Each year, we faithfully support 12 mission fields, send out short-term mission teams, and serve the local homeless community every month. Through our annual mission bazaar, we have been able to provide for needs around the world. Last year, we sent $10,000 to purchase a minivan for Yeje-won, a mission center in Country A that evangelizes and disciples North Korean defectors. This year, we plan to send $10,000 to help build a new church for Missionary Jongae Hong, who has been serving in Peru for over 20 years.
Since last year, we have renamed our annual revival to the “Mission Revival.” While hearing the Word from various pastors is valuable, we wanted to create a space where, through the testimonies of missionaries who labor in the field, we could rekindle our first love and renew our focus on the church’s primary mission.
Years ago, there was a YWAM Mission Strategy Center here in Colorado Springs, and many missionaries passed through this place. I’ve heard that many of the missionaries we now support are people we first met during that time. I believe that such connections broaden the scope of God’s kingdom and deepen our understanding of His purposes.
This year alone, we have come to know Missionary Bokum (Gospel) Goo from Nepal and Missionary Jongae Hong from Peru. We are also blessed to welcome Missionary Joseph Tark from Türkiye, Rev. James Kang-McCann this month, and, in October, Missionary Philip Lee, who has dedicated his life to North Korean mission. I trust that these visits will enrich the soil of our church’s heart for missions, and that they will also serve as special channels of God’s blessing for us. A~men!
