우리 교회가 속한 감리교단에는 감독제가 있습니다. 감독은 안수받은 장로목사 가운데 선출되어, 교단의 영적 방향을 제시하고 교리를 지키며 목회자들을 돌보는 중요한 역할을 맡습니다. 같은 감독제라 하더라도, 현재 우리가 속한 글로벌 감리교단(GMC)의 감독제는 과거에 속해 있던 연합감리교(UMC)의 감독제와는 사뭇 다른 점이 많습니다.

우선, UMC에서는 한 감독이 한 연회를 전담하는 ‘주재 감독제’였지만, GMC는 한 명의 감독이 6~8개의 연회를 맡는 ‘순회 감독제’를 채택하고 있습니다. 때문에 연회의 실제 행정과 운영은 총감리사(Conference Superintendent)가 담당하며, 감독은 교단 전체적인 차원에서 영적 지도자의 역할을 감당하게 됩니다. 또한 감독은 종신제가 아닌 6년 임기에 최대 두 번까지 재임할 수 있으며, 임기를 마치면 다시 지역 교회로 파송받아 목회를 이어가게 됩니다.

감독 선출 방식도 달라졌습니다. UMC에서는 각 지역 총회에서 감독을 선출했지만, GMC에서는 교단 전체 총회에서 선출합니다. 현재 GMC에는 약 60개의 연회가 있으며, 각 연회는 1명의 후보를 총회 1년 전에 추천하게 되어 있습니다. 그렇게 모인 60여명의 후보들 가운데 약 8~10명이 총회에서 감독으로 선출되겠습니다.

오는 2026년 9월, 남아프리카공화국에서 열릴 GMC 총회를 앞두고, 현재 각 연회에서는 바쁘게 감독 후보를 선출하고 있습니다. 우리 한미연회도 오는 8월 7일 특별 온라인 연회를 통해 감독 후보를 선출할 예정입니다. 이번 선출을 위해 감독 위원회에서 두 명의 후보를 추천했는데, 부족한 제가 그 가운데 한 사람으로 이름이 올라가게 되어, 이렇게 GMC 감독제에 대해 장황하게 설명드리게 되었네요.

먼저 이처럼 한미연회의 감독 후보군에 추천된 것이 제게는 당황스럽지만, 부족한 저를 과분하게 평가해 주신 것에 대해서는 감사한 마음뿐입니다. 아울러 제가 평소에 존경해 온 선배 목사님이신 하와이 로뎀교회의 이성현 목사님과 함께 추천되었기에, 개인적으로는 큰 영광으로 생각하고 있습니다.

사실 제 마음은 이쯤에서 조용히 물러나고 싶지만, 한미연회가 처음으로 감독 후보를 선출하는 과정인 만큼, 연회를 세워가는 일이라 여기고 정해진 일정과 절차에 따라 투표까지는 성실히 임하려 합니다.  하지만 제가 한미연회의 감독 후보로 추천되어 나가는 일은 없을 겁니다. 지난 한주 휴가 중 유타주의 광야를 걸으며 기도하고 고민해 본 결과, 저는 감독으로서의 소명이 없을뿐더러, 감독의 사역보다는 지역 교회의 목회가 너무 좋기에, 맡겨 주신 교회의 사역을 잘 감당하고, 또한 연회를 위해서 맡겨진 목회/안수 위원회 일과 총회 대의원의 일을 잘 감당하는 것이 제 몫이라는 결론을 내리게 되었습니다.
 
그러나 여러분의 담임 목사가 연회의 감독후보군에 추천되었다는 것만큼은 함께 기뻐하고 자랑스럽게 여겨 주시면 감사하겠습니다. 여러분의 축하와 축복은 제게 늘 큰 힘이 됩니다. 그렇게 감사한 마음으로 이제 8월 선교부흥회를 준비하고 페루비전여행 다녀오고, 가을 성경공부를 위해서 책을 펴볼까 합니다. 제 자리를 잘 지킬 수 있도록 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 감사합니다!

Our church belongs to the Global Methodist Church (GMC), which follows an Episcopal System. In this system, a bishop is elected from among ordained elder pastors and plays a vital role in providing spiritual direction for the denomination, guarding doctrine, and caring for pastors. However, even though this is also an episcopal system, it differs in many ways from the system of the United Methodist Church (UMC), which we previously belonged to.

First, in the UMC, a bishop would be assigned to a single annual conference—a system known as the residential bishop model. In contrast, the GMC follows a itinerant bishop model, where one bishop oversees 6 to 8 annual conferences. As a result, the actual administration and day-to-day operations of a conference are handled by a Conference Superintendent, while the bishop serves more broadly as a spiritual leader for the entire denomination. Moreover, bishops do not serve for life but are elected to a six-year term, renewable once. After completing their term, they return to serve in a local church.

The method of electing bishops has also changed. In the UMC, bishops were elected at each jurisdictional conference, but in the GMC, they are elected at the denomination-wide General Conference. Currently, there are about 60 annual conferences in the GMC. Each conference is allowed to nominate one candidate a year before the General Conference. From this pool of around 60 candidates, about 8 to 10 will be elected as bishops during the General Conference.

With the GMC General Conference scheduled to be held in South Africa in September 2026, annual conferences are now in the process of selecting their bishop nominees. Our Korean American Annual Conference is also preparing to elect its nominee through a special online session on August 7. In preparation for this, the Conference Episcopal Committee has recommended two candidates, and I have been included as one of them. That is why I am sharing this rather lengthy explanation of the GMC’s episcopal system.

To be honest, I was quite surprised to be nominated. I feel deeply unworthy and can only be grateful for the generous assessment others have given me. Moreover, it is an even greater personal honor to be nominated alongside someone I have long respected—Rev. Jonnathan Lee of Rodem Church in Hawaii.

In truth, my heart wishes to step aside quietly. However, since this is the first time our annual conference is nominating a bishop candidate, I feel that the full process is necessary for our conference to organize itself properly. Therefore, I have decided to participate in the scheduled process faithfully until the vote. That said, I want to clarify that there is no possibility of me being the conference’s nominee for bishop. After much prayer and reflection, I have concluded that I do not feel a calling to the episcopal role. I truly love local church ministry far more than the responsibilities of a bishop. I believe my role is to faithfully carry out the work entrusted to me in our local church, and also serve in the roles assigned to me within the conference, as the chair of the Board of Ordained Ministry and as a General Conference delegate.

Yet, I would like to ask you to celebrate and feel proud that your pastor was nominated as one of the bishop candidates in the Korean American Annual Conference. Your joy and blessing always mean a great deal to me. With that grateful heart, I now turn to preparing for our August Mission Revival and our Peru Vision Trip.
