미국은 참 좋은 나라입니다.
얼마전에 입양아들과 그들을 가족들을 위해서 지난 30년간 열어온 Korean Heritage Camp를 다녀왔습니다. 자신의 아이들을 키우는 일도 힘든데 전세계에서 전쟁과 가난으로 부모를 잃은 아이들을 수만명씩 데려와 사랑으로 키워준다는 것은 정말로 대단한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그리고 입양된 아이들이 자신들이 태어난 곳의 유산을 잃지 않도록 매년 문화, 역사, 전통을 가르쳐 주는 캠프를 자원 봉사자들의 힘으로 열어 왔다는 것 또한 대단한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다.
캠프에 참여하는 동안 머물렀던 숙소에서 저만치 성조기가 로키산맥의 산을 배경으로 잔잔히 흩날리는 모습이 너무 아름다워 사진을 찍으면서 미국이 참 좋은 나라구나 라는 생각을 다시금 해 보았습니다.
2주후에 휴가를 갑니다. 콜로라도 서쪽 산 속에 Ministry Haven이라는 곳이 있는데, 목회자, 또는 선교사 부부에게 돈을 받지 않고 숙소를 제공해 주는 곳이 있어서 며칠 쉬다 오려고 합니다. 미국에는 그런 곳이 많이 있습니다. 제가 살던 일리노이에서 북쪽으로 4시간 정도 올라가면 미시시피 강 옆에 Prairie de Chen 이란 작은 마을이 있는데 그 곳에서 목회자 가정에게 무료로 3층짜리 집을 통째로 빌려주는 곳이 있어서 거의 매년 가족, 또는 저희 부부가 올라가 사용했었습니다. 지금은 문을 닫았지만 Durango에도 그런 곳이 있어서 20년전에 저희 가족이 일주일간 잊지 못할 휴가를 보냈던 기억도 있습니다. 목회자와 그 가족을 위한 이런 섬김의 손길들이 있는 것을 볼 때 미국이 참으로 복 받을 나라라는 생각을 해 봅니다.
몇 년 전 휴가 중에 독특한 곳을 다녀온 적이 있었습니다. 위에서 말씀드린 Prairie du Chien에서 북서쪽으로 두 시간쯤 올라가면 미네소타 주의 Austin이라는 작은 도시가 있는데, 거기에 있는 SPAM Museum을 방문한 일이었습니다. 단지 ‘스팸으로 어떻게 박물관을 만들 수 있지?’라는 호기심에 갔던 곳이었는데, 거기서 참 뜻밖의 사실 하나를 알게 되었습니다. 지금은 건강에 좋지 않다고 여겨 지기도 하는 스팸이지만, 제2차 세계대전 당시에는 군인들뿐 아니라 전쟁으로 식량난을 겪던 영국, 소련, 유럽 여러 나라에서 단백질 공급원으로 큰 역할을 했다는 것이었습니다. 그러고 보니 미국은 세계를 먹여 살린 나라였습니다.
저도 처음 이민 와서 학교에 갔을 때, 점심을 무료로 주는 모습을 보고 “미국은 정말 좋은 나라구나” 하고 감동했던 기억이 있습니다. 이후 Pell Grant 덕분에 대학을 졸업할 수 있었고, 지금은 목회자로서 자유롭게 하나님의 말씀을 전하며 살아가고 있으니, 얼마나 감사한 일입니까!
예수님께서는 “너희 중에 큰 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되어야 하리라”(마태복음 23:11)고 말씀하셨는데, 그 말씀대로, 미국은 나그네와 가난한 자, 세계의 이웃들을 섬기며 참으로 아름답고 위대한 나라가 되어 왔습니다. 이제 독립기념일을 맞으며, 이 나라가 그러한 아름다움과 위대함을 계속 지켜 가기를 간절히 기도해 봅니다. 아멘.

America is truly a beautiful country.
Not long ago, I attended the Korean Heritage Camp, which has been held for the past 30 years for adoptees and their families. Raising one's own children is no easy task, yet this country has brought in tens of thousands of children who lost their parents due to war and poverty around the world and raised them with love. That alone is an extraordinary thing. But what’s even more remarkable is that volunteers have faithfully organized this camp every year to teach these adopted children about the culture, history, and traditions of their birth country so they wouldn’t lose their heritage.
During the camp, I stayed in a place where, in the distance, the American flag was gently waving against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. It was such a beautiful sight that I took a picture and once again found myself thinking, “America is truly a beautiful country.”
In two weeks, I’ll go on a vacation. There’s a place called Ministry Haven in the mountains of western Colorado that offers accommodations free of charge to pastors and missionary couples. The fact is that places like this can be found throughout the United States. For example, when I lived in Illinois, about four hours north, along the Mississippi River, there was a small town called Prairie du Chien where a ministry offered an entire three-story home free of charge to pastors’ families, which my family used almost every year. And, though it’s now closed, there was also such a place in Durango, where 20 years ago, our family spent an unforgettable week of vacation. When I see these generous hands offered to pastors and their families, I can’t help but think that America is truly a blessed country.
A few years ago, during a vacation, I visited a rather unique place. About two hours northwest of Prairie du Chien lies a small city in Minnesota called Austin, where you can find the SPAM Museum! Out of simple curiosity - ‘How can there be a museum about Spam?’ - I visited there, and to my surprise, I learned something quite unexpected. Though Spam is sometimes dismissed today as unhealthy, during World War II, it played a vital role as a protein source not only for American soldiers but also for people in war-torn regions like the UK, the Soviet Union, and various parts of Europe who were suffering from food shortages. Indeed, America was a country that helped feed the world.
I still remember when I first immigrated to the U.S. and saw that school lunches were provided free of charge. I thought to myself, “America really is a wonderful country.” Later, I was able to attend college thanks to a Pell Grant, and now, as a pastor, I can freely preach God’s Word — and how could I not be grateful!
Jesus said, “The greatest among you will be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). Indeed, America has become a beautiful and great nation by serving the stranger, the poor, and people across the globe. As we celebrate Independence Day, I offer this prayer: may this country continue to walk in that beauty and greatness. Amen.
