4년 만에 열린 여름성경학교가 하나님의 큰 은혜 가운데 잘 마쳤습니다. 이번 여름성경학교를 위해 기도로, 후원으로, 수고로 함께해 주신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.
특별히 이번 VBS에서는 이혜영 사모님께서 많은 수고를 아끼지 않으셨습니다. 사모님은 신학을 전공하신 전도사님이시며, 남편 이재근 목사님께서 군목 사역을 시작하시기 전까지 함께 다양한 사역을 감당하셨던 숨은 인재이십니다. 이번 VBS를 위해 그동안 감추어져 있던 재능을 아낌없이 발휘해 주신 덕분에, 준비 시간도 부족하고 여건도 여의치 않았던 상황 속에서도 모든 프로그램이 은혜롭게 잘 진행될 수 있었습니다.
사실 이 목사님 가정과의 인연은 1년 전 이맘때쯤 시작되었습니다. 시카고에서 알던 후배 목사에게서 갑작스레 전화가 걸려왔고, 함께 복무 중인 군목 목사님 가정이 콜로라도 스프링스로 발령받았는데 당장 머물 곳이 마땅치 않다며 한 달간 거처를 알아봐 달라는 요청이었습니다. 그렇게 시작된 인연이 이번 여름, 우리 교회에 큰 은혜로 이어졌으니, 하나님의 섭리는 참으로 놀랍기만 합니다.
살다 보면 이렇게 인연의 소중함을 새삼 깨닫게 될 때가 있습니다. 이번 VBS를 가능케 한 또 다른 인연은 네팔 교회를 이끄시는 구릉(Gurung) 목사님과의 만남이었습니다. 어느 날 교회 사무실로 전화가 와서 유창한 한국어로 예배드릴 공간을 찾는다고 하기에 다소 의아했지만, 알고 보니 한국에서 오래 사셨던 네팔 출신의 목사님이셨습니다. 그렇게 연결된 인연을 통해, 지금은 우리 어린이부 사역을 맡아 주시며 지난 몇 달 동안 어린이부 활성화를 위해 많은 노력을 기울여 주고 계십니다.
오늘 설교를 맡아 주시는 이상호 목사님과의 인연도 귀한 만남이었습니다. 목사님은 루이지애나 주의 리스빌이라는 한인 인구 약 300명의 작은 마을에서 지난 5년 동안 열악한 여건 속에서도 성실하게 목회를 이어오고 계십니다. 작년 한미연회 아침 경건회에서 전해주신 말씀이 깊은 인상으로 남아 있었는데, 이번 중부지방 목회자 가족 수양회에 하루 일찍 도착하신다는 소식을 듣고 설교를 부탁드리게 되었습니다.
이렇듯 기쁘고 감사한 인연이 있는가 하면, 아쉽게 이별을 맞이하는 인연도 있습니다. 오늘 1부 예배에서 말씀을 전해주신 이마이클 전도사님께서 다음 주일을 마지막으로 중고등부 사역을 내려놓게 됩니다. 풀타임 직장과 목회학 석사과정을 병행하며 사역까지 감당하는 것이 여러모로 어려워, 우선 학업에 집중하기로 결정하셨습니다. 팬데믹 이후 중고등부가 다시 자리잡는 데 큰 역할을 감당해 주셨기에 아쉬움이 크지만, 하나님의 부르심에 순종하는 결정임을 믿고 존중하며 사임 의사를 받아들였습니다. 비록 사역의 동행은 잠시 멈추지만, 하나님의 인도하심 가운데 언젠가 또 다른 모습으로 함께 하게 되리라 믿습니다.
2주 후에는 우리 교회 창립 43주년을 감사하는 예배를 드리게 됩니다. 43년의 세월 속에 맺어진 수많은 귀한 인연들, 그리고 무엇보다 하나님과 동행해 온 여정을 기억하며 감사드리는 시간이 되기를 소망하며, 귀한 인연 속에 한 교회를 섬기게 된 여러분께 다시 한번 감사를 드립니다. 감사합니다!

After four years, our Vacation Bible School was held once again and concluded with abundant grace. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported and served through prayers, donations, and dedicated work.
In particular, I want to recognize Mrs. Hye-Young Lee for her extraordinary effort during this year’s VBS. She is not only a pastor’s wife but also a trained minister with a degree in theology. Before her husband, Rev. Jae-Geun Lee, began his chaplaincy, they served together in various ministries. This summer, she generously poured out her hidden gifts to bless our church’s VBS. What once seemed nearly impossible was made possible by God’s grace, and her leadership played a vital role.
Our connection with the Lee family began about a year ago when a fellow pastor I had known in Chicago suddenly called me. He explained that a military chaplain family, newly assigned to Colorado Springs, was in urgent need of temporary housing for about a month. Through that call, our relationship with the Lee family began—and now, we have truly experienced the blessings that come through that connection.
There are moments in life when we are reminded of how precious and meaningful our connections can be. Another such connection that made this VBS possible was with Pastor Gurung, who leads a Nepalese church. One day, our church office received a call from someone speaking fluent Korean, asking if they could rent space for worship. At first, I was puzzled, wondering, “Why would a Korean-speaking person call a Korean church to rent space?” I later learned that he was a Nepalese pastor who had spent many years in Korea. That unexpected connection has since led to him taking on the role of children’s pastor at our church, and over the past few months, he has faithfully worked to revitalize our children’s ministry.
Today’s guest preacher, Rev. Sang-Ho Lee, is also with us because of a meaningful connection. He has been faithfully serving in Leesville, Louisiana—a small town with only about 300 Korean residents—for the past five years under challenging circumstances. I remember the inspiring message he shared during morning devotion at last year’s Korean American Annual Conference. When I heard he would be arriving early for the Central District Pastors’ Family Retreat, I asked if he would be willing to share God’s Word with us, and he graciously agreed.
While we celebrate the joy of some connections, others come with the sorrow of parting. Today, Rev. Michael Lee, who is preaching at the first service, will be concluding his ministry with our youth group next Sunday. Balancing full-time work, seminary studies, and ministry has become increasingly difficult, and he has prayerfully decided to step back for now in order to complete his Master of Divinity and pursue ordination. We are truly thankful for all that he has done to help revitalize the youth ministry after the pandemic. Though it is bittersweet to say goodbye, we respect his decision and believe that God will open a new path for us to serve together again in the future.
Two weeks from now, we will celebrate the 43rd anniversary of our church’s founding. May this be a time to reflect with gratitude on the many meaningful connections formed throughout those 43 years—and above all, to give thanks for the journey we’ve walked together with God. Thank you!
