할렐루야! 부활절입니다! 제가 안수받은 후 30번째 맞는 부활절이라 그런지 이번 부활절은 조금 더 특별한 것 같습니다. 무엇보다도 11명이 세례와 견신례를 받는 기쁜 날입니다. 오늘은 무엇보다도 이들을 맘껏 축하하고 축복해 주는 날이 되었으면 좋겠습니다.
이번 부활절 주제는 “엠마오의 길” 이라고 정했습니다. 엠마오의 이야기는 예루살렘에서 7마일 정도 떨어진 엠마오란 마을로 가던 두 제자가 부활하신 예수님께서 그 3시간의 길을 함께 가면서 여러 이야기를 나누셨는데도, 예수님을 전혀 알아보지 못했다는 이야기입니다. (눅 24장) 그들과 같이 우리도 인생길을 걸어가면서 우리와 함께 하시는 예수님을 깨닫지 못하고 살아가는 시간이 많지 않을까 생각해 보면서 부활하신 예수님을 새롭게 만나는 부활절이 되기를 바라는 마음으로 이 주제를 택해 보았습니다.
우리 모두의 삶이 그러했듯이, 오늘 성인 세례를 받는 3분의 교우들의 삶도 그렇지 않았을까 하는 생각을 해 봅니다. 그렇게 예수님이 함께 해 주신 삶의 흔적을 이제서야 깨달으면서 어느 순간 예수님을 향한 눈이 뜨였던 엠마오의 제자들과 같이 새로운 믿음으로 새로운 삶의 여정을 시작하게 됨을 다시 한번 축하드리며 마음을 다해 축복합니다.
이번 부활절이 특별한 이유중 또 하나는 지난 40일간 함께 드렸던 일천시간 기도 캠페인 때문이기도 합니다. 40일간 매일 평균 40여명의 교우들이 새벽마다 참석해 총 1200시간이 훌쩍 넘는 기도를 적립했습니다. 그중 18명은 하루도 빠지지 않고 참석하셨고, 30일 이상 참석한 교우들도 14명이 됩니다. 이번 기도 캠페인을 시작하면서 “하나님, 이번 40일 새벽기도회에 한번이라도 참석하는 교인이 90명은 되게 해 주세요” 라는 기도를 드렸는데 마지막날 박미숙 권사님께서 손자 며느리가 아이를 낳느라 병원에 가는 바람에 증손녀를 봐 줘야 한다며 Ariella를 새벽 기도회에 데리고 오셔서 90명이 딱 채워지는 응답을 경험케 되었습니다. 할렐루야!
기도 캠페인 응답 카드에 “나만 바라보라고 응답해 주셨습니다” 라고 써 주신 분이 있습니다. 생각해 보니 Ariella를 통해서 제게도 그 말씀을 주신 것 같습니다. “이제 가만히 내가 너희의 기도에 어떻게 응답할지 잘 보아라”라고 마음 가운데 주시는 음성을 들으며 마음이 평안해지면서도 기대감에 흥분이 되네요.
예레미야 선지자에게 “크고 은밀한 일을 보이리라” 고 하셨던 약속의 말씀과 같이 그 크고 은밀한 일이 무엇일까 궁금함에 주위를 한 번 더 둘러보게 됩니다. 혹시나 엠마오 길 위의 제자들처럼 부활하신 예수님의 기적을 보지 못하고 있지는 않는지? 하는 마음의 설렘을 시편 말씀으로 깨워 봅니다. “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다.” (시 46:10)
그런데 오늘은 하나님께서 행하신 일, 행하고 계신 일, 그리고 행하실 일을 생각하니 그저 잠잠할 수 만은 없을 것 같네요. 오늘은 소리 높여 박수 치며 부활의 주님을 찬양하고 ... 내일부터 다시금 잠잠히, 새롭게 역사하시는 하나님의 응답을 설레는 마음으로 기다려 볼까 합니다. 할렐루야!

Hallelujah! It is Easter! Perhaps because this marks the 30th Easter since I was ordained, this year's celebration feels a little more special. Above all, it is a joyful day as 11 of our beloved members receive baptism and confirmation. I hope today will be a day when we wholeheartedly celebrate and bless them.
The theme for this Easter is “The Road to Emmaus.” The story tells of two disciples traveling to the village of Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, when the risen Jesus joined them and walked with them for three hours, speaking with them—yet they failed to recognize Him. (Luke 24) I chose this theme with the hope that this Easter will be a time for us to newly encounter the risen Lord, recognizing that we, too, often journey through life unaware that Jesus is walking with us.
As with many of our own journeys, I imagine that the lives of the three adults receiving baptism today were much the same. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, they have come to realize that Jesus has been with them all along, and their eyes have now been opened to Him. I once again offer my heartfelt congratulations and blessings as they begin a new journey of faith.
Another reason this Easter feels so special is because of the 1,000-hour Prayer Campaign we had over the past 40 days. Every morning, an average of over 40 members attended early morning prayer, and together we accumulated more than 1,200 hours of prayer. Among them, 18 people never missed a single day, and 14 participated on over 30 days.
When we began this campaign, I prayed, “Lord, let there be at least 90 different people who attend the early morning prayer service at least once during these 40 days.” On the very last day, Exhorter Misook Hasberry brought her great-granddaughter Ariella to the prayer meeting, because her granddaughter-in-law was in the hospital giving birth. With Ariella's attendance, the number reached exactly 90! Hallelujah!
One person wrote on their prayer response card: “God answered by saying, ‘Fix your eyes only on Me.’” I realize now that when Ariella walked through that door, God was speaking the same to me. I heard the still voice in my heart saying, “Now be still, and watch how I will answer your prayers.” My heart is at peace, yet I am also filled with joyful anticipation.
Just as God once promised the prophet Jeremiah, “I will show you great and unsearchable things,” I find myself looking around with wonder, asking what those great and hidden things might be. Am I, perhaps, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, missing the miracle of the risen Christ right before my eyes? Then I am calmed by the words of the Psalmist: “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
And yet, today, as I reflect on what God has done, is doing, and will do, I feel I cannot remain still. Today, let us lift our voices in praise, clapping our hands in celebration of what the risen Lord has done in our midst! And then, beginning tomorrow, I will return to stillness - with hearts full of anticipation - as we watch and wait for the fresh works of God that are yet to come. Amen!
