요즈음은 매일 새벽 교회 파킹장에 들어설 때면 이미 여러 대의 차가 와 있는 것을 보면서 뭉클해지는 마음으로 하루를 시작합니다. 지난 수요일에는 새벽기도회를 마친지 두어 시간이 지나 본당을 정리하러 들어섰더니 그때까지 기도하고 계셨던 권사님의 눈물 어린 기도 소리가 들려 마음이 찡했던 적도 있었습니다.
매일 새벽 40~50 여명의 기도소리로 본당이 채워지는 것을 보는 것은 요즈음 이민 교회에서는 찾기 힘든 축복이 아닌가 하는 생각이 지난 주에 문득 들면서, 여러분에게 참 감사한 생각이 들었습니다. 그 고마운 마음에 지난 주간에는 무언가 해 드리고 싶어서 하루는 안수 기도도 해 드리고, 하루는 아침 식사를 대접하는 행사도 가져보고 했습니다만 ... 무엇보다도 이렇게 새벽 제단을 가득 채울 수 있는 교회의 담임 목사라는 것이 너무나도 감사하고 자랑스럽네요. 또한 이런 우리의 기도에 바라고 기대하는 것 이상으로 미쁘시게 응답해 주실 하나님을 생각하니 아침마다 감사로 마음이 설렙니다.
22일째 사순절 기도회를 이어오고 있습니다. 지금까지 642 시간의 기도를 쌓아 올린 우리 교회가 참 자랑스럽습니다. 지난 주일에는 견신례반 학생들을 만나 멘토 여러분들이 기도해 주는 시간이 있었는데, 도란 도란 중고등부 예배실을 소담히 채워가는 대화와 기도 소리가 마음을 또 한 번 뭉클하게 했습니다.
두어 주쯤 전, 새벽예배 대표기도를 맡아 주신 권사님의 기도가 우리 모두의 마음을 잘 요약해 주는 것 같아 여기에 나눠봅니다. “40일 기도로 주님 앞에 나아갑니다”고 하시면서 이렇게 기도하셨습니다.
“아직도 내려 놓지 못한 것들, 또 마음의 근심과 걱정을 십자가 앞에 내려 놓을 때 온전히 우리의 마음을 비우고 하늘로부터 내리는 은혜와 평안함으로 채워 주시옵소서. 겨자씨 만한 믿음을 허락하시어 그 속에서 소망을 가지고 꿈을 꾸며 기도할 수 있게 도와주시옵소서. 다음 세대를 이끌어갈 우리의 자녀들을 축복해 주셔서 그들이 여호와를 만날 만할 때에 하나님을 찾고 부르짖는 새벽 이슬 같은 청년들이 되게 하여 주시고 저들 가운데 새로운 부흥이 일어나게 하시어 세상을 변화시키는 우리의 자녀들이 되게 하여 주시옵소서.
힘들고 팍팍한 세상을 살아가는 모든 사람들이 날마다 기도로 주님께 나아 갈 때에 우리의 기도를 들으시고 응답해 주셔서 날마다 기적을 체험하며 우리의 삶이 간증이 될 수 있도록 도와 주시옵소서. 때로는 기도해도 응답이 없어서 실망하고 좌절할 때도 있습니다. 응답 없음도 감사할 수 있는 믿음을 허락하여 주시고 문제보다 더 큰 하나님을 바라보게 하셔서 우리의 생각보다 높고 크신 하나님의 계획과 생각을 깨달어 아는 지혜도 허락해 주시옵소서.”
그리고 이렇게 기도를 마치셨습니다. “오늘도 어떤 기적이 우리 앞에 있을지 기대하며 하루의 삶을 살아 가는 한미교회 모든 성도들에게 힘이 되어 주시고 능력이 되어 주셔서 기적 같은 삶을 살아가게 하여 주시기를 간절히 기도합니다.” 아~멘!
“기적 같은 삶을 살아”가는 한미교회 여러분! 여러분이 무척 자랑스럽습니다!

These days, as I drive into the church parking lot for early morning prayer meetings, my heart swells with emotion when I see several cars already parked there. Just this past Wednesday, two hours after early morning prayer had ended, I stepped into the sanctuary to tidy up and was deeply moved to hear the tearful prayers of an Exhorter who had been praying all that time.
The thought struck me last week—seeing the sanctuary filled with the voices of 40 to 50 people praying each morning is a blessing that is increasingly rare in immigrant churches these days. It filled me with deep gratitude. Last week I tried to do something to express my gratitude — one day I offered to pray for everyone by laying-of-hands, and another day offered a breakfast fellowship. But more than anything else, I am just so thankful and proud to be the pastor of a church that fills the early morning altar like this. Moreover, when I think about how our faithful God will respond to our prayers beyond what we ask or imagine, my heart is filled with thanksgiving and anticipation every morning!
We are now on the 22nd day of our Lenten prayer journey. I am truly proud of our church, which has accumulated 642 hours of prayer so far. Last Sunday, I had another touching moment when I heard the gentle hum of prayer in the youth chapel as our confirmands and their mentors prayed together. That was another awesome sight!
A couple of weeks ago, an Exhorter’s prayer at the early morning worship expressed what I believe is the heart of all of us. So, I would like to share that prayer, which went like this:
“Lord, as we lay down the things we still cling to, our worries and anxieties, at the foot of the cross, help us, O Lord, to empty our hearts completely and fill them with grace and peace from heaven. Grant us faith even as small as a mustard seed, so that from it, we may discover new hope, start to dream dreams, and begin to pray. Bless our children. Help them to seek and cry out to you while you may be found. May a new revival rise among them, and may they become the ones who change the world.
For all those who live in this tough and trying world, as we come before You daily in prayer, please hear and answer our cries. Let us experience miracles every day, so that our lives may become testimonies of Your power. There are times when we become disappointed and discouraged because our prayers seem to be unanswered. Grant us, even then, the faith to give thanks, and open our eyes to see You — God who is still greater than any problem. Help us to understand and embrace Your plans and thoughts that are higher and greater than ours.”
And she ended her prayer saying, “Today, we live our lives in expectation of the miracle that lies ahead. Strengthen and empower all the members of Hanmi Church so that we may live a life of miracles.”
To all of those at Hanmi Church who are “living a life of miracles” — Thank you! And I want to add that I am so proud of all of you!
