누군가의 길을 비쳐 준다면 (Shining a Light on Someone's Path)

연말, 연초의 바빴던 스케줄을 마치고 조금 여유 있는 한주를 보내나 했더니, 그동안 밀렸던 일들을 처리하느라 더 바쁜 한주가 되었네요.
사택의 꺼진 등불도 갈고, 교체 기일이 지난 워터필터도 갈고, 이것저것 손봐야 했던 미니밴도 손보고, 밀린 서류들도 정리하고, 그동안 조금 밀렸던 통독도 따라잡느라 적지 않게 바쁜 한주를 보냈습니다.
그리고 조금 시간이 나는 걸 어떻게 아셨던지 만나자고 하는 분들도 있어서 좋은 대화, 만남의 시간도 여럿 가졌네요.
목요일 하루는 연회에서 새로 맡게 된 목회위원회 일로 하루를 보냈습니다. 연회 목회 위원회는 안수받을 목회자들을 돕고, 심사하는 일을 주로 하는 위원회입니다. 그와 함께 다른 교단에서 이적하는 목회자들을 역시 심사하고, 그리고 연회내 목회자들의 휴직, 안식년, 은퇴등의 신분변경을 관리하는 일 또한 맡게 됩니다.
이번에 글로벌 감리교단에서 새로 마련한 장정에 따라 목회위원회를 조직하고 여러 시스템을 마련해야 하는 일이 적지 않은데, 그렇게 새 장정을 공부하고 제출된 후보자들의 서류를 검토하고 하는데 하루를 보냈습니다.
연합감리교단에 있을 때 지금의 목회위원회 일을 하는 안수위원회에서 16년을 섬긴 적이 있었습니다. 지방 안수위원회에서 4년, 연회 안수위원회에서 12년을 섬겼으니 꽤 오래 그 일을 했네요.
안수위원회 일이 쉽지는 않았지만 늘 감사하게 그 일에 임했습니다. 특별히 매년 안수 후보자들을 심사하는 일에 큰 보람과 함께 늘 도전을 받곤 했습니다. 후보자들에게 던지는 질문은 사실 저희가 안수 받을 때 고민하며 답해야 했던 질문들이었기에, 비록 심사를 하는 입장이었지만, 매년 우리가 우리 자신을 또한 새롭게 심사해 보는 기회가 되었기에 도전이 되었고, 우리 자신을 돌아볼 수 있는 더할 수 없이 소중한 시간이 되었습니다.
그리고 심사를 통과한 후보자들을 보면서 우리 자신의 긴 여정을 돌아보며 새롭게 감사할 수 있는 기회가 되었기에, 그 어떤 연회 사역보다도 저에겐 소중하고 감사한 사역이 안수위원회 사역이었습니다. 그런 귀한 사역을 마친지 6여년 만에 다시 그 일을 맡게 되어 마음이 설렙니다. 무엇보다도 누군가의 소중한 여정에 먼저 그 길을 가본 사람으로 조금이나마 도움이 될 수 있다는 것은 인생에서 누릴 수 있는 큰 보람 중에 하나가 아닌가 합니다.
집사님 한 분이 전화를 하셔서 한웅재 목사님의 “소원”이라는 찬양이 너무 좋은데 예배 시간에 한 번 더 부를 수 없을까요? 하고 물어 오셨습니다. 저도 좋아하는 그 찬양에 이런 가사가 있습니다. “내 가는 길만 비추기 보다는 누군가의 길을 비춰준다면 ...”
그렇게 살고자 하는 마음이 되새겨져서 감사했던 한주였습니다. 아멘!

Having wrapped up the busy schedules of the year-end and New Year, I thought I would have a relatively relaxed week. However, I ended up even busier, catching up on tasks that had been put on hold.
I replaced the burned-out lightbulbs in the parsonage, changed the water filter that was overdue for replacement, took care of various repairs on the minivan, organized piled-up paperwork, and caught up on the Bible reading plan that had fallen behind. It was indeed a busy week. And as if they knew I had a bit of time, some people reached out to meet, gifting me with a few meaningful and wonderful time of fellowship.
On Thursday, I spent the entire day working on my new responsibilities with the Annual Conference’s Board of Ministry. This committee primarily assists and examines candidates for ordination. In addition, we review clergy transferring from other denominations and oversee status changes for pastors within the conference, such as leaves of absence, sabbaticals, and retirements.
With the newly established Book of Discipline in the Global Methodist Church, organizing the Board of Ministry and setting up various systems requires considerable work. I spent the day studying the new guidelines and reviewing the submitted documents of candidates.
Back when I was in the United Methodist Church, I served on the Board of Ordained Ministry for 16 years — 4 years at the district level and 12 years at the conference level. It was a long time of service in this role.
The work was never easy, but I was always grateful for the opportunity to serve in the Board. Each year, examining ordination candidates was both rewarding and personally challenging. The questions we asked the candidates were the very same ones we had to wrestle with when we were ordained. So, although we were in the role of examiners, the process became an annual opportunity for us to re-examine ourselves. It was a deeply valuable time to reflect on our own calling and journey.
Furthermore, seeing the candidates pass their examinations gave us moments of deep gratitude as we looked back on our own long journey. For me, serving on the Board of Ordained Ministry was one of the most meaningful and rewarding experiences. Now, after six years away from this work, I feel excited to take it up again. I think, being able to help guide others on their important journey — as someone who has walked that path before — is one of the greatest joys one can experience in life.
This week, a deacon called me and asked if we could sing "Wish" by Pastor Han Woong-jae once more during worship because she loved it so much. I also love that song, which contains these lyrics: "Rather than just shining a light on my own path, if I could illuminate someone else's way..." I am grateful, as I am reminded of another opportunity to do exactly that. Hallelujah!
