How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window is an inconvenience. It could also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows, and reap benefits like improved comfort, increased potential for resales, and less costs.

This will keep the new putty from taking in the moisture and drying out and cracking with time. Repeat this process at intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

Place it into the rabbets where the glass will be placed. The glass must be positioned against the putty on both sides. If necessary, lightly tap your glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane is cracked then you can seal it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk before pressing it into the sash. In other cases, you'll need to apply putty over the crack to form a tight seal and keep water out. After the putty is dry, clean the oily film off the glass using a rag and allow it to completely dry before painting. If you paint before the putty is fully dry, it will not form a strong seal and may discolor or leak in time.

Paint

If you've suffered a break in a window pane, then you may be worried about the cost of replacing it. However, replacing one glass pane does not require a huge amount of money if you do it yourself. Even a double-paned window can be replaced for a fraction of what it would cost a professional.

If you are working on a large window, make sure that it is securely fixed to the frame. This job can be done relatively easy and quick with the appropriate tools and techniques.

When you are ready to start with the removal of the window pane. Pry out the metal glazing points attached to it. These are essentially small metal triangles which function as "nails" which hold the window in within the frame of wood.
